In Ridgefield, Washington (exurb of Vancouver, Washington) today police were called to the home of a 60-year-old woman who was reportedly suicidal. (Everything in this report is reportedly.)

The woman confronted police with a "starter pistol" and demanded that they shoot her. The woman discharged the pistol. Police left the home and called the SWAT team.

After a three-hour standoff a SWAT team member shot the woman. She was taken to a hospital. No one else was injured. No other significant information is forthcoming.

SWAT used for suicidal old ladies. SWAT used for routine search warrants (not even arrest warrants). SWAT used for everything.

FBI most wanted Whitey Bulger charged with 19 murders, mob boss responsible for a lot more than that, fugitive 16+ years, 20 guns and $800,000 in cash in his apartment... no SWAT. Lured him out with a fake phone call, made a routine arrest.

I guess they wanted him alive instead of dead, shame they dont' do the same in other cases.
