Charles,
You make an excellent argument on the overall issue. I am not sure that I agree with the restrictions on felons or explosives passing the strict scrutiny test, but it is probable that you are correct.
If the Second Amendment was upheld to mean what I think it means, I also agree that there would be a national uproar, started and fed by the media. I am not as sure as you appear to be on the passing of the new amendment, but it would definitely be a fight.
But, now we are changing the discussion from what we support and believe to the tactics of how to get there. I support a very strict interpretation of the Second but I do not expect this to happen soon. To get there, I actually do recommend the very path you mention. We got into this mess through incrementalism, and that is how we will get out of it too. Instead of giving up our rights in small steps, we need to start taking the small steps back in the right direction. We can pass laws now removing some of the restrictions on carrying (and I do expect some to pass this session). If we keep gong back in each session and asking for a little more back, and show that the bloodbath that the liberals fear has not occurred, we will keep getting more restrictions removed.
As much as I would love to see the Second enforced now, I expect it to be a long slow process.

I am all about open carry for CHL holders under the same rules that apply for concealed carry. I personaly would carry concealed most of the time for several reasons including not wanting the attention that would come from open carry but open carry would reduce worries like having my cover get blown open by a strong west texas wind exposing my gun plus concealed carry can sometimes be difficult on the motorcycle because of the gear I wear to protect myself in a crash. I would not worry about my gun getting snatched with open carry just because even carrying concealed I always try to keep my weapon protected at all times just in case.
