My only point was that this is how we have measured inflation for a long time, so whatever was true of the inflation rate under (say) Reagan, is true today. There is no conspiracy. This is the actual inflation rate as it has been calculated for decades.

I don't know who told you that... but that is not correct. The way inflation is measured has been changed by the Government multiple times. If you calculate the way they did in prior to the change Inflation is around 12%. The way they measure now they are saying its 3%.
