RE:
his apartment
Police just said "pretty sophisticated" booby traps and they are trying to figure out how to disarm it (explosives and flammables )
Explosives appear 'very sophisticated' and police could be at scene 'for hours or days,' Aurora police chief says

Aurora is pretty-much becoming a Police-state. I grew up there and also Recruited there in the 80's.

It's pretty sad that many politically motivated folks will be disappointed if there isn't a connection to the tea party (maybe even some on this forum).

And therein lies the problem: the antis...leadership anyway....are not interested in reducing violent crime, but quite the opposite. The absence of individual means of self-defense, whether by "duty to retreat" and other laws, or by prohibiting weapons, increases crime, and in the environment created, increases dependency on government, and that increased dependency is exactly the desired outcome.

BTW, The "ban guns" people are all over the blogs wanting gun laws... I knew that rhetoric would be brought up.
I was listening to Mark Davis covering the story this morning. He said something which we probably all agree on, but I've not heard it put quite this way.
He said "
The answer to bad people with guns is good people with guns"

Agree, but the progressives don't view average, law-abiding citizens as "good people" that can be trusted with guns - only the
state can be trusted.

Shooter had been a student at the nearby University Medical School, but withdrew.

Looking like there are many similarities to the Tuscon shooting...wonder if he withdrew voluntarily? ETA: for the shooter - approx. same age & leaving school.

That was the gist of my ticked off rambling, as well.

Truly disgusting. My heart breaks for everyone involved.
This certainly is approaching one of the worst case scenarios for an Active Shooter situation that I can think of. As folks who carry, there is going to be plenty for us to learn from this. The fact that this guy was wearing body armor, using CS Gas (or something like that) certainly indicates that it would be much more difficult to effectively neutralize him as a threat. The setting of most movie theaters would be a nightmare scenario for a shooting like this - it seems like most theaters have at most two exits, that you must go in one direction to access - basically a kill box if a subject were to position himself properly. Low light, close quarters, and a densely populated environment with scared peopl all over the place. Terrifying stuff.
I don't think handguns like the FiveseveN are carried by folks with much regularity (remember reading about two, or three folks on here that have done so in the past), but that platform would certainly hold it's advantages in a situation like this.
Re: the aftermath of this incident: It's a shame that anyone would use a situation like this to further their own agenda - I'm sure there is a special place in you know where for folks that take advantage of things like this for personal gain. I've already read multiple comments from both Conservative and Liberal folks (from various places) that are brimming with anger at the other 'side' and already trying to assign blame... which certainly isn't productive.
Apparently the subject booby trapped his apartment with explosives. This guy is truly a depraved piece of work.
Stay Safe all,

The 5.7 ammo that is designed to penetrate body armor is restricted and not sold to civilians.

Indeed. Though my knowledge of the cartridge is limited, I wonder if perhaps there might be other loads that could be effective against armor. I'm also curious if a fast moving projectile like this would have a greater intrinsic effectiveness on some types of body armor (with non AP rounds) compared to a standard pistol cartridge.

No confirmation one way or the other, but Breitbarts Big Govt site is reporting they think James Holmes is a registered Democrat.
Story here:
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government ... d-Democrat
There's also some unconfirmed speculation that he was involved with OWS and was vocal that the group wasn't "doing enough". We will see in the coming days if the media is as quick to report that little rumor as they were to assume that he was a Tea Partier. I won't hold my breath.
The thing that bothers me most so far is this statement by the suspects mother:
A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes' mother told ABC News she had awoken unaware of the shooting and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.
"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."
So you hear of a shooting and think your son did it....sounds like he may be similar to Laughner, in which folks close to him knew he had serious mental problems and didn't do anything about it.

Get ready for the shock of the day, y'all!!
Editor's Note: An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.
