gemini wrote:Same problem here, getting to the good roads. In the DFW area face it, you usually gotta do Interstates, at some point, to get away. One of my brothers grabbed a bike last spring and we cruised all over PK and also the Palo Pinto Res. If you did 4, then you ate at Mary's in Strawn. Granbury is nice, Loco Coyote for eats, then do a loop through Walnut Springs, Hico (pie @ KKKafe) and back. The Center is good too. Their cherry strudel is muy bueno. Ride to eat, eat to ride!
Here is my "skip the highways as much as possible" solution...granted it does take 377 for a bit...but I start pretty near the starting dot in Southlake...I like Dove Road, it has some nice parts too it:

The Koffee Kup Kafe...I have heard of that place...need to check it out.

Dove road seems like it would be nice, but i have trouble going 30 mph for that long. There are always cops on that road. It's one of the biggest speed traps around.

You should try this part of 51. Google Maps
LINK, especially the part south of the 205 intersection.
The biggest collection of "decent" twisty roads closest to the metroplex is in this corner of town... Hamilton, Erath, Hood, Bosque, Sommervell, Commanche, Palo Pinto (FM 4). Nothing to rave about, but decent. However, that short stretch of 51 is excellent.
Here's a nice day ride in that area.... Sorry about this map not being 100% complete route. It's converted from Garmin GPX via Google Earth and when Google Maps imports the file it's not completing the route... You can get an idea about the roads and just connect the rest of the dots. Sorry about that... Busy answering phones today.

Ah, home sweet home.
I try to ride all the roads you've highlighted at least once every spring and fall. Sometime I just head west and look for roads I haven't been down before, sometimes I hear banjos...

First time I ate there, I just wanted a cheeseburger so that is what I ordered. Turns out they don’t have regular burger, it’s like a 2 lb. burger. I was just a little ticked off no one warned me, I didn’t even look at the menu, just ordered a burger and got this giant novelty thing on a platter. Then I had to pay for whole thing but couldn’t even take it with me as I had no saddlebags at the time. I was a little irritated at the whole thing.
So, if you go to Mary’s in Strawn, look at the menu and remember the portions are HUGE.

So what's the over/under on the guy from the keys?

I see he last posted on that thread in September...is he still OK (as in, he has all of the parts he wanted to keep on him??). Sounds like a *horrendously* stupid decision. I do wish him well though.

After you leave The Koffee Kup and get down to God's Country (Bosque County) at the bottom of your loop on 219, go about 5 more miles south on it to Cranfills Gap and stop in at "The Horny Toad" bar and grill before you swing back up toward Stephenville...little back country out of the way place with good food and atmosphere... usually has some riders there on the weekends. A number of good backroads here in Bosque county...from the Gap back to Clifton on 219 is a nice 20 mile stretch.
