CHL instructor question??

I just recently found this site, I have had my TX chl Instructors license since aug. 1995. And atended the recertification classes in 97, 99,01,03,05,07,09. are they now saying I am not qualified without the NRA Cert?

That has not been said for renewals. The determination of requirements for those that have already gone through the CHL Instructor certificaiton will be made later this year.

The law doesn't distinguish between new and renewal, so now that DPS has interpreted the law this way, it will be a tough argument to justify breaking the law intentionally and knowingly to benefit some people.

Because they will not take a renewal more than 6 months before renewal. And since this is a legistlative year, there some bills that will change requirements for CHL, so those will impact instructor renewal too.

As Keith said, DPS has not announced anything yet. However, please understand that DPS isn't saying you are not qualified; Texas law requires NRA, TECLOSE or "other" certification in order to get or renew a CHL Instructor Certificate. As I've stated in other posts, I strongly recommend getting certified as an NRA Basic Pistol Instructor as soon as possible. Anyone who chooses not to meet the other statutory requirements is gambling their future as a CHL Instructor on the willingness of DPS to violate Texas law. I don't expect Texas' top law enforcement agency to make such a decision. I would think the very best anyone could hope for is that DPS would extend the deadline for getting NRA certification such that everyone would need it by the 2015 renewal. Please note, I said that's the best we can hope far; it is not what I expect to happen.

Get certified now! (No, I'm not an NRA TC, so I won't be teaching instructor classes.

I have been instructing armed security for years have taught LEOs as a LEO instructor so did not need to take NRA instructor pistol course to renew but decided I wanted to refresh my training. I can't begin to tell you how much I learned our NRA mentor Mr Crowe was great so I recommend the course. It was one of the best firearms programs I have ever attended.

I can't begin to tell you how much I learned our NRA mentor Mr Crowe was great so I recommend the course. It was one of the best firearms programs I have ever attended.

I just finished the NRA Basic Pistol & Home Firearm Safety Instructor courses with Mr Crowe this weekend. He's a great TC and imparted a ton of knowledge. As soon as my certs are official, I'm hoping to take him up on his offer to help teach in some of his classes.

Additionally, my son (turns 14 in march) is looking forward to becoming an apprentice instructor and teaching with me! And my daughter (15) want to become an apprentice rile instructor.
