Even with the last two counts, it is still safer than gun free Chicago.:

I worked for a company that was in negotiations to sell our software to an African country back in 2004. As the lead developer, I would have been one of the guys sent over to make sure the install went smoothly. My wife at the time was pretty shook up about the prospect of me going. I was a little excited about it. She asked me one afternoon, You do realize the AID's outbreak there is massive right? I told her I wasn't scared of getting AIDs. She said why not? I explained that to get it, I would have to have sex with someone who had it. I'm married...

The trip would have been sponsored by a countries government, and we were assured that we'd have military security while we were there.
Thankfully though it turned out that they just wanted a trip to the US on our dime. And negotiations fell through shortly after their return to Africa.
I can't even recall which country it was now. But I think it was either Botswana or Congo.

I have only been to South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Twice for hunting (SA once and Zim once) and for business in SA about a half dozen times.

Maybe a total of 60 days on the continent. Felt safer than Chicago, for sure!
