A civilian with a hand gun license should be limited to having a pistol in their home, place of business, or a shooting range. There's no reason for a civilian to walk around in public with a pistol. If someone wants to strap a gun on their hip they should apply to the respective agencies and go to the respective schools and receive the respective training. Just like you said. Nobody except the police and military needs a pistol in public places.
You sound suspicously like another person:
"Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA - ordinary citizens don't need guns, as their having guns doesn't serve the State."
They both sound a lot like the people saying we should become cops if we want to carry in schools, while voting, at football games, etc.
Perhaps they are unaware of the various departments' requirements to become a police officer.
Prior to ADA, A un-named police dept. had a sign that stated "Handicapped persons need not apply"
So, I applied at another undisclosed city, did better on the obstacle course than most, did better on the written tests than most, so they took me and only me, "the handicapped guy" into a private room and told me to handcuff their martial arts instructor who would resist me, while they tape recorded the event. After I did that, and double locked them, (to their surprise) they stated that since the cuffs pinched him a little where he got a bit of his skin in the hinge area, that I didn't pass the special test so I couldn't be hired. (My Mom piched me harder than that as a kid in church to make me behave, sheesh) Later the ADA went into effect, but the age requirements (about 35 I believe) were lower than my age, I believe I was 36 at the time.
Generally,
Age limitation
Many of the investigative jobs have age require-ments and applicants must be at least 21 years of age, and under the age of thirty seven at the time of appointment.
Other positions only state that you must be 21 years of age and be a U.S. Citizens. The job announcement will provide the quali-fications required for that position.
If you want to work in law enforcement and you are over age 37 your options are more limited and you may have to consider a support position that does not have an age requirement.
---------
in the panhandle of Texas the age cut off is 44,
-------
Fort Worth Age Requirements: 21-44 years of age (cannot have reached 45 years of age)
--------
Abilene Maximum Age:
No more than 35 years of age by date of hire on June 23,

There are exceptions ...
There is no maximum age limit to apply for the Flower Mound Police Department. ...

But I don't live there, nor desire to sell my home and move there, I retired where I wanted to retire.
But the MAIN reason I would rather not become a police officer is .....
I wouldnn't be welcome to drink coffee at some coffee shops
... gotta wonder if trollers working for Lipton Tea Company are suggesting people become LEOs so they can't drink coffee and instead buy Tea....
