Re: Officer pepper sprays lawbreakers - blame begins
Since they already had their arms interlinked, it might have been interesting to handcuff them together in place.....sooner or later, someone has to use the bathroom........they might disrespect the law, but nobody wants to sit in someone else urine........

Instead of handcuffing, why not use sticky foam? Whatever happened to that stuff anyway? Seems like it would have been ideal for this situationbilgerat57 wrote:Since they already had their arms interlinked, it might have been interesting to handcuff them together in place.....sooner or later, someone has to use the bathroom........they might disrespect the law, but nobody wants to sit in someone else urine........

Re: Officer pepper sprays lawbreakers - blame begins
I am glad to see some intelligent conversation on this subject. In another CCW forum I commented, at length that the protestors started the confrontation and disobeyed a direct legel request to disband. While I do believe that the pepper spray was just a wee bit over the top the protestors were warned repeatedly what was coming if they did not comply.
My feeling is that if you are going to break the law, violently or not, you had better be ready for the consequences. I have, I did, and I feel no sympathy for the protestors.
BTW, in the other forum the over whelming response was that we live in a totalitarian police state and that the cop was being a "pig." Their words, not mine.

Whatever... Today the protesters should be thankful that they're in a country where cops use mace instead of bullets.Maxwell wrote:BTW, in the other forum the over whelming response was that we live in a totalitarian police state and that the cop was being a "pig." Their words, not mine.
(Just to be clear, that's directed at them, not you.)

If these were republican protesters, protesting in favor of gun rights with would any of you object to their treatment?
My guess is there would be multiple posts about how "the Obama administration is ignoring the constitution" complaints about first amendment violations and excessive force.
But, that's just a guess...

If 2A supporters were pepper-sprayed for acting in the same manner, we would be condemning the protesters for making the pro-2A movement look bad.tallmike wrote:If these were republican protesters, protesting in favor of gun rights with would any of you object to their treatment?

We had 2A "protesters" during the TEA Party events. They obeyed the law, conveyed their message, and left the area with no garbage, excrement, or graffiti, and committed no crimes.MasterOfNone wrote:If 2A supporters were pepper-sprayed for acting in the same manner, we would be condemning the protesters for making the pro-2A movement look bad.tallmike wrote:If these were republican protesters, protesting in favor of gun rights with would any of you object to their treatment?

The differences between these two "groups" is both stark and frightening.

Re: Officer pepper sprays lawbreakers - blame begins
Except that didn't and hasn't happened. You keep trying to force a hypothetical point that hasn't and probably won't occur. Its like the media trying to say that during the Giffords shooting an armed citizen almost shot the wrong person ignoring the fact that he didn't.tallmike wrote:If these were republican protesters, protesting in favor of gun rights with would any of you object to their treatment?

What if <insert hyperbole here> then what would you say?
I will profer a response when, and if, something like you describe ever occurs. So far the examples we have of 2A protests have all been very civil and law abiding so I'm going to go with the empirical evidence.

Re: Officer pepper sprays lawbreakers - blame begins
I pulled a guy off of a cop that was losing a fight. He had done just that, OC'd him until depleted. The story is a fun one but suffice it to say that in this case, the only thing the pepper spray accomplished was make me burn the rest of the shift. The Annoyed Man wrote: You can pepper spray someone that's on PCP until your can runs dry and all it will do is make your own life harder. As far as this protest goes and the strategy of interlocking arms, police could have just tazed any two side by side protestors, and their interlocked arms strategy falls apart. Then you wade in and start carrying people off. Only two protestors get zapped, the ones on either side of them let go so as to not get jolted, nobody gets hurt, two people feel the pain of being tazed. Everybody gets to go home unhurt that night except for those students whose parents say, "no, the price of independence is that you are responsible for the consequences of your actions.....not me."
I believe in a republican form of government but that entails a limitation of your rights where they begin to infringe on mine. As far as I am concerned, you can occupy until you're blue in the face; but when you block my ingress or access to places I have the right to be you are infringing on my rights and creating a dangerous situation (I have conducted rescues while navigating such obstructions) and you are wrong. I will defer to the experts on this board about the proper use of OC spray, but considering the alternatives of Tasers and rubber bullets, or for that matter fire hoses and police dogs; I think the pepper spray was simply...wait for it... irritating.

Re: Officer pepper sprays lawbreakers - blame begins
They weren't complaining about either of those things. This wasn't an O(substitute location) protest. It was a protest against cost increases and the practices of the university administration. They also expressed their support of the OWS protesters but that isn't why they were there. The only real problem I have with the OC spray was that it was applied in what could have been a dangerous manner. The type of dispensers they were using were designed for use at a much greater distance than used in this instance. Having said that, the protestors did lock arms and dare the police to move them. Game on at that point. They're not complaining about getting the loan. They're complaining that the greedy widows and orphans who loaned the money expect to be paid back.

LOLOLOL... I so want to post this on my FB page, but I'm already in one increasingly heated (on their side, anyway) debate with a friend, and we all know it's never a good idea to fight a two-front war.texasmusic wrote:Took me a while to compose myself after seeing this gem.
