I'm blown away by how many people today want the government to make decisions for them --or perhaps more accurately, want the government to make the decision for others when it's a decision they like for themselves.
I would not want to speculate on the savings in light bulbs vs the savings in vehicles but I can tell you that it made a sizable difference in my electric bill when I changed to CFL. I have a couple rooms where turning a light switch on ignites a new generator at the power plant...LOL. My 75 watt bulbs are now using 13 watts but still providing the same amount of light as the incandescent bulbs.
A quick comparison of energy usage.....a gallon of gas is equivalent to about 33 kWhr. Using your 75 watt bulb replacement as an example....you save 62 watts, or .062 kW. So, you'd have to run that 13 watt bulb for 532 hours to save as much energy as reducing gasoline consumption by 1 gallon. If your vehicle got 19 mpg instead of 20 mpg, and you traveled at 20 mph, in approximately one hour you'd save as much energy as as it would take 532 hours for the light bulb to save. So, the vehicle is only 5% more efficient, while the light bulb is 83% more efficient, but the amount of energy saved is 532 times greater for the vehicle --which is why an efficiency comparison between the two is irrelevant.

It seems like it's time to start paying more attention to lumens, rather than watts.
Saying that a 75W bulb only uses 17 watts doesn't make sense.
I know how much light I expect to get from a 100W bulb in my lamp [enough to read a book], but don't have any idea how many lumens.

I agree but for now that is how they label and sell them. Lumens is on the package but the watts are featured center stage.

True. It reminds me of trying to something for nothing. You get 70W for the price of 20W [but the bulb costs more!]

I have learned the hard way that temperature is possibly more important than lumens. At one point my living room looked like my reptile terrarium. I had to purchase new bulbs in the correct color range!

Very true! They should start putting the temperature on the packaging.
I tried using some "grow" lights, thinking that would be closest to sunlight, but I didn't like it.

LOL... I can imagine how that worked out. You are lucky you didn't grow hair on your palms.

rotor wrote:Freon R12 was banned I believe in 1995. What facts should I check? Virtually every car air conditioner used R12 prior to the ban. The ban was to "protect the ozone layer" You could go to Mexico and get R12 at any time so I guess we only protected the ozone layer across the US. There were never successful retrofits for R12 cars so if you wanted an air conditioned car in Texas you had to buy a new one. Same thing is happening now with CO2 tax but countries like China can dump as much as they want into the atmosphere.
OK I can agree with the spirit, but not the facts, first of all "Freon" is a brand name owned by DuPont and it encompasses many types of refrigerant, so yes R-12 or refrigerant formula 12 is banned, because DuPont lost the patent not because of anything else no matter what the politicians say. so yea check your facts. All CFC's or chlorinated fluorocarbons were banned at that time including R-502, R-12, R605 and several others, HCFC's are due to be banned very soon as in the next 2 years. All this is occurring because DuPont lost the patents and its been couched in lies by many including Al Gore. The countries that are signatory to the Montreal Protocol and no Mexico and most 3rd world countries are not signers as they don't have large use of the product, agreed to phase out any and all refrigerants containing Chlorine because of Ozone damage as the chlorine binds with the Oxygen molecule and damages the Ozone by removing 1 oxygen molecule but its a lie that we are causing global warming
as far as successful retrofit, its not necessary to change crap, r-134A is not quite as good as 12 but the oil is miscible in small systems, does not cause problems and works just fine, on top of that it has been addressed to show you that again you need to check your facts there is a drop in replacement that works just as well as r-12 it costs more but works just fine same as there are several drop in replacements for r-22 the stuff you use in your house AC so please don't compare apples the libtards and don't speak on a subject you obviously know nothing about

This has got to be THE most riveting thread I've ever had the great good fortune to read, but for some reason, I keep falling asleep at the keyboard while reading it - must stay awake, eyelids growing heavy, head inclining to chest, I'm fighting it, fighting it zzzzzzzzzzzz

Yep... it is a real cliff hanger alright! A bit like discussing the weather with my mom.

NcongruNt states:"There are lots of blogs that do very little than spout drivel from some schmoe about whatever it is he thinks is important."
Salient point and the greatest common denominator in blogging. This is what I immediately think when someone cajoles us with - "read my blog". Some schmoe begging for attention for his dopey views and inexpert opinion on whatever.
Being importuned to "read my blog" also sounds pretentious, pompous and grating...and yes, there's a small percentage out there that perform a valuable service. From what I've seen of this type, the originator isn't waving a personal flag for ego satisfaction.
WildBill discussed blogs and forums.
I see forums as distinctly different from blogs.
Forums aren't owned by the posters. It's a meeting place for a lot of give and take. It's not for ego advantage.
When I see "read my blog" on a forum, I get annoyed at the presumption. The so called blogger is riding the coattails of a web site where his inveigling isn't really appropriate, but not so egregious that many will confront him.
I agree that forums are distinctly different from blogs. Of course, there are the "look at me" blogs. There are some look at me and "see how clever I am" blogs. Some blogs appear to me to be harmless rambling or maybe a personal diary that is published for all to see. Some blogs are closer to the annoying newsletters that some people send out at Christmas time.
Other blogs may be a creative outlet for those of us who like to write. Rather that keeping our thoughts in a bound book that resides in a desk drawer, we can put them on a blog. Maybe we will get some recognition or encouragement from some dear reader. Or maybe not.
I think that with most forums, the opportunity that some one will actually read your post and respond is much greater than having a blog. There is some "ego advantage" to discussing a topic in a forum. I have been know to express my opinions so people can see how clever I am.
There are no blogs that I read on a regular basis because most people don't have enough stuff to say that can keep my interest. Blogs and bloggers can be boring and pretentious, but
it's like watching TV. You can always change the channel if you don't like what's on.
