Vest as Cover Garment

After reading all these posts about vests I'm going to get one. I've heard that wearing Hawaiian shirts scream "I'm armed" and I have lots of those I wear quite often. Now I will have a vest too. Maybe I'll wear them at the same time!

I used to do the Hawaiian shirt thing. So far as I know no one ever pegged me as being armed. Then I went to undershirt with a polo style shirt over garment. The Hawaiian shirt was more comfortable (not as hot), but now that I've found I can carry a Sig P938 or an XDS in my pocket whether I'm wearing jeans or slacks I've dispensed with over garments for summertime. And Excaliber put me on to ankle mag carriers, so I've cleared my belt a little too (I'd never even thought of ankle mag carriers until he mentioned it in another thread).

The vast majority of the time I do fine just wearing an untucked shirt, whether a button-down or pull-over. When it's cool enough, I wear a jacket. About the only time I wear a vest is if I want to actually carry something in those 1,000 pockets and make my 5.11 Vest weight 30 pounds instead of just 18 pounds.

I have Hawaiian shirts, but I don't really like them even though they are cool and comfortable. I don't think they scream "gun" as much as they scream "old fart!"

I like the 5.11 vests. They are a bit too heavy, but they are really convenient. I carry a lot of stuff and I like all the pockets and I have never had the sense that anyone was giving me a second look. I always figured that anyone who knew what the vest was, would know about CHL laws so it would not be a big deal. I mean hey, if all these 20 something kids can walk around public in pajama pants, I should be able to wear my vest right?

You'll blend in better with the cool kids if you wear bunny slippers with your vest.

Has anyone tried out the Rothco vests? They have mesh lining and are vented in the side and back, so they seem like they'd be fairly cool in heat.

As long as your handgun is concealed I wouldnt worry. I used to wear a khaki summer vest made for hot weather years ago. No one gave me a second glance. Mostly I wore it when I was vacationing or taking road trips. Was great for that. I can understand if someone wears a vest and its covered with Glock patches or something where it might draw attention. But I dont know anyone who does that.

I just make sure my gun is concealed and I go about day.

Hahaha! I have a Hawaiian shirt. I mean dont most of us guys? And mine is pretty cool...well I mean I think it is...because its more of khaki/tan with pineapples and palm trees on it. I know...cool right?! I got married last year and my wife saw that shirt and just about died. I have been forbidden to ever wear that shirt.

I told her "But baby....look how well this conceals my gun. No one would suspect I had a gun on"

And her response? "Someone will shoot you for wearing that shirt. Its awful. Never. Ever. Wear that shirt."

I used to live in Hawai'i, so I have a few nice Aloha shirts and a few cheapos. I still kind of think of them as somewhere in between formal wear and casual wear. In Hawai'i, they're formal wear. Bankers wear them to work, as do most business professionals. My first week in Hawai'i I was invited to a wedding. I was the only one who showed up in a suit. The groom and groomsmen were in tuxes, but every other guy there, including the father of the bride, was in Aloha shirts and khakis or shorts (it was August).
