Great input Skippr. I'm considering starting an AR pistol build as a bedside/trunk gun, will use .223 as I have plenty AR mags ready. Can grab my AR and rock and roll or the future AR pistol and have mags in multiple locations for either.

I also have a 930 SPX, but with a Streamlight TLR-1 HL.

I feel the best ammo is Federal LE132-1B, which is 15 pellets of #1 buckshot. That's what mine is loaded with, but it's VERY hard to find.

I have been using Winchester Super-X Ammunition 12 Gauge 2-3/4" Buffered 00 Buckshot 9 Pellets. It seems to have a good pattern. I look at it like you are lining up 9 people with .32 caliber pistols and everyone shooting at the exact same time. I also like that fact the most shotgun fights do not last that long.

I do like the video PawPaw posted with the Federal LE132-1B. I know a lot of people like slugs, but I would hate to have that slug leave the confines of my home.

Got my sig sauer emperor scorpion 1911, very impressed with it. Going to try and get to the range this weekend. Ordered from budsgun Wednesday, in my hands today.

All this talk about and concern for hearing protection reminded me that I do have my Howard Leight Impact Sport ears also on the night stand. It might take between 5-10 seconds from awake to have them on and carbine in hand, but I haven't practiced this much to know for sure. The G21SF is easier to grab faster if needed that quick.

I did get a chance to practice with my nightstand guns and a timer at my club today. With the carbine we practiced as if I were searching the house for where that bump in the night came from, so it was up at the ready. I had two targets up and panned back and forth as if searching. I had the timer set to go off between 2-5 seconds at random intervals and told my daughter to press the button whenever she wanted after I began panning. To not just shoot at whichever target I happened to be pointed at I would choose which one to fire at ahead of time so that I might have to come back to to that one if I were pointed at the other one when the buzzer went off. I figured it would add a little higher level of difficulty since it was daylight and all. Anyway, I was able to get off the first shot on target center mass in less than 0.5 seconds consistently with splits in the 0.14 average area. I didn't try more than a string of three shots, but was getting off three in around 0.8 seconds most of the time. The handgun was about the same, but a little faster on the first shot being about 0.4 seconds.

Then I practiced drawing and firing from that new Safariland 7TS holster for the G21SF and a TLR1 light mounted. I started off around 1.2-1.3 second first shot and after 10-20 rounds was able to get that down to 0.87-0.95 for the first shot on target center mass. When I tried strings of 2 or 3 shots they would go from center mass to right should of the BG. I started trying to get my first shot a little lower in the stomach area and slightly to my right and then all three shots stayed center mass. More practice is needed to keep all three shots in roughly the same place, but I did get about 90% of all shots in the upper center mass area in 1.3 - 1.5 seconds.

Then it was my daughters turn. (H-dub) She humbled me a little with her first shot time with her M&P15-22. Her first shot times were from 0.20-0.25 and follow up shots ran about the same. So, her first shot was on target center mass extremely fast, but follow up shots were about 1/10th of a second slower than mine, which gave her string of three about the same as mine. But man that first shot is quick for her.

I've read precious few that have flashlight mounted nightstand guns.

Soon I'll getting a combo light and laser for my nightstand Glock 19.

As it is, my Glock 19 has only tru-glo sights.

You might want to rethink a pistol length AR for home defense unless you have the ability to get ear pro on real fast, or a suppressor for it. If you think an unsuppressed carbine is loud, a pistol length AR will be really loud.

Have only had a chance to take it out once, when i left the range i was tboned by an uninsure/unlicensed driver. Car was totaled and have been dealing with that.


It fire and handled well thou, not a single hiccup new out of the box, 200 rounds. Grips and straps are a tad abrasive, but ill deal with that.

I guess I'm one of the precious few. After doing a couple night shoots at my club with most stages being done with handheld flashlights and others with weapon mounted lights and even one with only road flares I came to the conclusion that a weapon mounted light was the way to go for me. Both accuracy and speed were far better that way and it gives me a free hand to boot if needed.

I've tried a laser and didn't like it even after several attempts to get used to it. If you can use it effectively, more power to ya.

Absolutely agree. I know folks may not agree, but for me no HD gun is complete without a weapons mounted light.

I typically keep a SigPro 2022 on the nightstand.

I try to keep is simple and old school--Mossberg 500 with 18" barrel and a surfire mounted below the barrel. This is loaded with 00 Buck. The back-up is a S&W Model 15 with Speer GDs

I have a Glock 21 with mounted Crimson Trace CMR-205 laser/light. Loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. Also in the bedroom have a Mossberg 590 with mounted TLR-1 Light loaded with Federal #00 buck with flight control. I found some 3" shells at gander mountain that contain 12 pellets of #00, but currently am loaded with the 2-3/4" shells with 9 pellets.
