"Trace" was the last album I played before starting to pack up the old hi-fi equipment. Good stuff.

That's quite a coincidence. Bon Voyage! :tiphat:

The Mary Ellen Carter by Stan Rogers, a song about a mishandled workboat that went down in a storm, raises the hair on my neck.

The real-life Marine Electric sank in a storm off the east coast, and one of the few survivors, chief mate Bob Cusick, said the lyrics of that song gave him the strength to survive - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT-aEcPgkuA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

After Marine Electric was lost, Cusick went on to work for honest ship inspections and his testimony before Congress brought about the creation of the Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers.

Kevin Costner's character in The Guardian was right. There is a legend of the sea that's saved thousands, but it's not superstition. It's an unknown story of how a Canadian folk singer sat down to a song he said wrote itself in about 20 minutes. The song reached across years and miles to first save Cusick, and then to save thousands through the Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers.

If that's not enough, think about what Stan Rogers heard before he wrote his song, perhaps a garbled distress call through channels of time and space we don't acknowledge in our science and deterministic dogma.

After all, marine VHF radio is so prone to misunderstanding the Coast Guard always repeats your boat name back alphabetically. "Coast Guard Station Corpus Christi this is Sailing Vessel Bubba" will be answered with "Sailing Vessel Bravo Uniform Bravo Bravo Alpha, this is Coast Guard Station Corpus."

The real life Marine Electric was a coal ship, or collier. Did Stan Rogers hear a distant, hard to understand distress call? Did "Marine Electric, Collier" sound like "Mary Ellen Carter"?

I leave that discussion to crews of stormy, troubled midwatches. And there's more.

The Marine Electric sank, in part, because she lingered too long in heavy seas assisting another vessel in distress.

Stan Rogers died, in part, because he lingered too long on a burning plane, helping other passengers get out.

And you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow

With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go

Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain

And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.

Rise again, rise again - though your heart it be broken

And life about to end

No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend.

Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.

Thanks Wild Bill. I was packing albums and was almost to the T's when it was time to change the vinyl. Sun Volt was on the top of the stack. I hadn't listened to it in 10 years or so.

Quite a talented lady. Academy Award nominee as lyricist with her brother Micheal composing the music for Best Original Song "Out Here On My Own" from "Fame".
Michael and lyricist Dean Pritchard won with the title tune from the same film. RIP

I always liked this song, and a girl who said it was her favorite, but that's not for publication. :thumbs2:

It's amazing that a garage band mastered harmony so well. This scene is from a movie shot in Florida not far from the band's location, if I recall correctly. That's another unique aspect to Mercy, i.e. a garage band being asked to sing in a movie, even a B movie. I tried to confirm or refute the statements made in the quote below and it does appear that "Love Can Make You Happy" hit three different charts many years apart. Obviously, everything clicked in this song for this one hit wonder band. Too bad they didn't do much more.

Chas.
What a beautiful song, and the greatest One Hit Wonder ! This song sold millions, and hit number 2 in 1969, James Marvell ( from Mercy ) and The Cavaliers do a country version of " Love Can Make You Happy " in 1981 that goes to number 1 on the country charts, believe it or not James Marvell does yet another Christian version of " Love Can Make You Happy " in 2008 that goes to number 1 on the Christian charts, making this the only One Hit Wonder to hit the charts 3 times.

I remember the tune well. I noticed what looked like cans of Falstaff beer being served but even better when I clicked on the YouTube icon to watch on full screen there's an NRA ad on the video.

Hey, that dog park looks familiar....isn't that in Austin? I'm guessing it is since the video was shot by Robert Rodriguez. I thought the girl looked familiar too...didn't realize it was Kat Dennings until the credits.
