all is well south of Katy as well. Few trees down and out of power from Friday till noon Monday.

I was in the land of fruit and nuts for the storm. My wife and Samantha (my daughter) were asked if they wanted me to stay.....two Texas women then informed me that they had two generators, food, water and firearms and in no way needed my assistance. They then proceeded to put me on the plane .......to make some money <g>

Kept in touch and they were just fine. I got home yesterday, just in time to break out the chainsaw.....see.....they did need me

Cell signal strength is very spotty on the island. Hopefully Seamus is OK. I went down there yesterday to take my Dad a UHaul, so they could pack up the salvageable stuff. My parents rode IKE out (77th street) and had 4 feet of water in their home. Basically they lost everything. My mom's place on the strand (25th st) had 8 feet of water in the first floor, but her place was unscathed as she lives on the 4th floor. My uncle in Cedar Lawn didn't get any water in his home and he's OK. I left about 11pm last nite. It was very quiet, dark and eerie. It felt like a scene from "I am Legend". The gulf was completely calm and there was a full moon and a beautiful cool breeze. I was having Alicia flashbacks for sure. There is a ton of debris on the road from 519 all the way to 61st street (boats etc). I was happy to get back to Houston, but we still don't have electricity in Montrose.

Apparently they're letting residents in today only from noon - 6pm.

"We are home and safe. We have city water. Pls tell everyone. I don 't have reliable cellular service. - Jim."

I have a generator and fuel I am offering him. As I hear from him I will pass it along.

Just checking back in. The report on house in Gaveston Island received about 4 foot of water, this was by eye witness on the ground. The goverment is messing up. Texas is now a police state with center at Galveston. The pres. and gov has had the photo op for there next elections. The motto: Remember Galveston, remember Ike, remember friends, pray for Texas.

With 9/11 and Ike, it only reminds us that we live in an age where both man-made and natural disasters occur. It is obvious that in both cases, our members take the "be prepared" motto to heart. We stand and protect our families, friends, loved ones, and even those that we do not know. We put out our hands, lifting up those that have less or need help.

Now is not only a time to continue to help our family and others, but a time to reflect. Please take a moment and remember those in 9/11. Not only on the date each year when it rolls around, but often. They are a symbol of what we have and what we need to defend as a country and as an individual.

Whole communities have been wiped off the face of the earth. Many of us were significantly more fortunate. Please take a moment and remember these individuals. Then remember them as a symbol of what you still have and move forward, extending your hand to your fellow man. You may not know your fellow man, but they are still your family.

I'm glad to hear that seamus & family are okay. I assumed he got out, but was still a bit concerned.

Mars & I are at a relative's home near Corpus. Our house is fine, other than a little rain damage right inside the back door--no biggie... nothing that can't be easily fixed. We're here because gas and ice are scarce in Kingwood & Atascocita, and the power still isn't on. We'll return in a few more days regardless, as Mars will need to return to work. (School is suspended indefinitely for me, but I'm sure we'll go back before too much longer.)

Some of our relatives didn't do so well. My in-laws house was badly flooded--at least 4 feet. They also own businesses in Bridge City, and most of that town was badly flooded. Their house was fully insured, so that's not a problem, but they won't have much of an income until Bridge City is back on the power grid. They will probably move in with us until things get started again in Orange County.

My dad is fine, but will stay with us for a few weeks until the power is back on at his house. Until we get power, they're with other relatives.

Since anygun checked in, I'm assuming Charles is okay too. Hopefully jbirds and ElGato will say hi or send word that they're okay.

In my best fake Scottish accent: "Cap'n, there be power here!"

Lights went up about three hours ago to the sound of cheering in the neighborhood. We lost power at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, and with first light had no power, water, or phone...and I assume cable service. The water came back up around 6:00 p.m. Sunday; phone landline started working between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and I pegged the power on at 6:05 today, Wednesday.

I scraped by with only a little damage: shingles off on about 15%-20% of the roof, and down to the plywood in a few places. Rain-in water damage in two of the upstairs bedrooms (one worse than the other; carpet will need to be replaced) and the upstairs bath; a lot of rain damage to the garage ceiling...so I assume I have a lot of clean-up and trash prep in the attic and the boxes of mixcellaneous stuff stored up there. Bizarre thing is that the two house on either side of me have a few shingles off, but none on the street have anything approaching the roof damage I do...and my house was one of the last three built in the neighborhood and is newer by up to four years than some with little or no damage. I also had a tree half-stripped (but not downed), and I seemed to be the only one doing tree clean-up, too. I'm thinking a tiny microburst, but who knows?

Plenty of food, water, lights, batteries, first-aid supplies, and ordnance. No looters here. I even have about half my stash (all the ordnance, of course) left, even after sharing some with a neighbor who hosted two kids more than expected in his house and ran short on Monday.

Thank God for the cool, dry front that moved in Sunday. It's making this far more bearable for literally millions of people than it otherwise would be. I understand about 900,000 CenterPoint customers have power back on, with another 1.2 million or so to go. Our power lines are all underground, and I believe that aided us in getting electricity back sooner rather than later. They're saying most of the west side of metropolitan Houston should be up before Friday is over, with central and eastern areas taking a few more days to over a week.

My prayers go out to the coastal residents who got hit the hardest. They may be facing less base structural damage than they would have if Ike had been a Cat 5, but the clean-up will be long, arduous, and tedious, and they have to contend with the threat of disease from contaminated water sources and septic debris.
