Agreed. It all depends on your shooting habits. You want enough to supply your shooting habit and hold back enough in the event something happens or just if demand spikes like it did a year or two ago.

If you want to do it on the cheap, WalMart sells those 100 round Federal 223 packs that have functioned well for me.

The answer is a simple mathematical formula:

2M * SL = Ammo supply needed

Where M = the average number of rounds you use in a month; and

SL = the shelf life of your ammo (in months), factoring in storage conditions, etc.

If you don't want to do the math, then keep buying until it feels like you have way too much, and then buy another 1,000 rounds.

Note that this advice applies to all calibers, not just .223

I use the inverse square rule. For every round I shoot I replace it with four.

I was tempted to wait almost two years to reply but I don't have your patience.

Just wow.

Hope you're not my neighbor in a bad situation. Good to know you're advocating shooting people and stealing their guns though. Healthy mentality. :thumbs2:

fair enough. Just sounded from your original post that you were planning on actively hunting out other peoples gear. I don't like pirates. :biggrinjester:

I'm new to the world of the AR, so I have not stocked a large quantity of ammo yet. At one point, I think I had 500 rounds in my house, then I went to the range and shot 350 or so. Right now, I have 200 rounds of FMJ in my range bag, and 150 rounds of JSP loaded into my 5 magazines, just in case. I'm getting ready to buy a large quantity (large to me anyways) of steel cased ammo for the range, and when I go to the gun show, I'll pick up a bunch of brass cased ammo to keep in reserve for the a problem arises kind of moment.

That's my theory; I only need enough to deal with the first wave. If I survive, there will be more guns and ammo than I can use.

You cant ever have too much ammo, just keep buying or start buying components to reload.

Keep buying ammo until your wife starts complaining. At least that is when I know I have enough.
