For what it's worth - - - I'd keep the rescued dog for a companion for your dog to be. They'll be able to keep each other company when you are away from home. Ya'll done good getting her out of a bad situatuion. Remember to spay and neuter.

Yeah, we need to take her to the vet and make sure she's not carrying any communicable disease that she could give our new puppy, or have any debilitating health problems that could cause heartache down the road. Because she was so neglected I wonder if she's even been spayed yet.

We think a companion dog is good - but raising two puppies can be difficult. That's why we chose to only adopt one Schnauzer for now and get another one next year.

If she was more mature we would be more seriously considering it, and had we not already paid for and arranged the shipment of our purchased puppy we might have just kept this one instead of buying one.

We'll see what happens. My mom expressed interest in keeping him but I don't think she would provide the best home, given that she's not home much and isn't active due to her health.

In any case, she'll have a loving home either with us or someone else - we won't give her to just anybody. :)

Well...we took the little girl to the vet and she has heartworms, tapeworms, and is not spayed. We paid $200 for vaccinations and we're looking at $700 more for the heartworm treatment plus spaying.

This is not good - we do not have this excess cash because we spent our excess on buying the Schnauzer and fixing our car. And by excess, I mean we do have a "cushion" in our savings, but we have agreed not to touch it except in an emergency...and we do not feel this constitutes an emergency.

If my manager at work cannot take her, we will need to place her through the Denton Humane Society at the suggestion of a professor of mine. She says we would foster her, they will pay her vet bills, and we get to "choose" who she goes to out of any potential adoptees. Not the best option, but I don't think we can keep her.

You will be able to screen the potential adopters to find the best possible forever home. You might call around, there may be a vet who will discount the HW treatment. Also, depending on how heavy a heartworm load, it may be possible to treat with monthly ivermectin (really only effective for a very light case).

Don't beat yourself up. This is why I usually advocate getting a dog from a rescue (for those not wanting to go the breeder route) since the dogs are vetted, hopefully in a foster home and you have some idea about behaviors, etc.

Well we found a foster for her. She seems nice and is one of the organizations "top foster moms" so I think she'll get a good foster home. Plus, they indicated she is very selective about who she adopts her dogs out to, so I'm not so worried.
They're going to pay for her vet expenses (spaying, heartworms, etc) so she'll be in good health when she's adopted out.

This is great because not only will she be placed in a good home, but we won't be worrying about our own expenses to make sure she's cared for. Win-win.

And our Schnauzer pup will be here...soon. The breeder's daughter had a baby and her mother is in the hospital so she's been understandably preoccupied. We're delayed a few more days in getting him, but the point is he'll be here soon. :)

I have a Rhodesian ridgeback/ blue healer mix... She was a gift, and what a gift she is. She pretty much lives in the back yard and barks at anyone who gets too close to the fence or the front of the house (unless she knows them). Very loyal and loving, and never had a problem with her temperament. She also gets along very well with other dogs. When she is in the house she is either following me around, or is lying 'in HER spot' on the couch. I wouldn't trade her for a papered full breed of anything.

Over the years I have had nothing but Rottweilers...I am on my 4th now..and the first female that I have had, She is a VERY good dog....well trained...well mannered...great with kids and other dogs. I know Rotts have gotten a bad rap over the years...but that is only because the dogs have had bad PEOPLE.

I had a ridgeback almost 40 years ago; one of the very best dogs I ever had. I wouldn't mind another one.

Spaying shouldn't cost more than $50-$75, and for such a small dog, it should be closer to (or possibly below) $50.

It's the heartworm treatments that get real pricey. Maybe some org like the ASPCA can help with that cost?

I know Rotts have gotten a bad rap over the years...but that is only because the dogs have had bad PEOPLE.

It's already been resolved but thanks. The heartworm treatment was going to be about $500, then the spaying we had just estimated at $100. The extra hundred...I have no idea where I got that from! :)

Very mild-mannered so far, but that could change as he becomes more comfortable with his new surroundings. :)

But she does seem to fart a lot. And it is a tad unpleasant. Perhaps an adjustment to her diet would help than situation. I don't know.

With the people who say their dogs have bad gas what are you feeding them? If it's Ol Roy then that's your problem. If the breed has a nasal phallic issue get use to the gas. I know Blue (Kangaroo or something like that) gives dogs gas.
