In a recent day in Obama's world a cup of coffee is more important than giving a proper salute.

Kudos to the Marines for not kicking him in the rear after he walked by doing that.

I think those guys deserve a good conduct medal leaf after that.

The President, while Commander-in-Chief, does not wear a uniform, is not a member of the armed forces and should not return a salute. In fact Ronald Reagan was the first President to return the salute. He got a tongue-in-cheek approval from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, "I don't think anyone will say anything to you." when Reagan asked him about the propriety of returning the salute.

Well, non-veterans certainly should not return salutes. As to the propriety of the CiC returning a salute, I don't know that I disapprove if a veteran does (Carter, Reagan, the Bushes) but even Bush Jr. gave some half-baked gestures passing as salutes. Veteran or not, if a president isn't going to salute properly, a nod of acknowledgement is better.

FWIW, the USC sets out standards that allow veterans, in or out of uniform, to salute the flag. I don't have a problem with the CiC, if they are a vet, returning a hand salute.

That's an interesting point. I wonder if it has just become one of those things to do, like releasing your tax returns. That also is not required, but some folks sure get their stuff in a wad if one of the candidates doesn't release them quick enough.

Flying "Old Glory" isn't required either, but if you are going to fly it, it should be done correctly.

Do it right, or not at all. If you choose to respect the military by saluting....do it properly and with honor. If you choose to honor them by not saluting because you are not a soldier then say so, and give a nod to them as you walk by. But doing it half way is just being a slob and a schmuck.
