Perhaps you missed all the coverage during 9/11/01 in NY and DC. I found it quite a show of ordinary folks helping ordinary folks in the most horrific of circumstances.

Never ever pick on Granny in her Buick Battleship. By the time she has slowed that battlewagon to see what those bumps were, she'll be in the next county, and her car is made of STEEL...

So I guess all the first responders and civilians, many of whom died to try and save potential victims, were just "picking up the pieces" and came from somewhere else.
