Respectfully, this is a long way from being called murder, and it could easily end up being self-defense. There are still too many gaps in what we know.
I think it is a good thing that there will be more investigations. Perhaps then there can be some closure on this matter.

People have been saying more about George than Trayvon in this conversation, so let me help correct that.
Martin, who was from Miami Gardens, was killed in Sanford, a town of 55,000 just north of Orlando. His father took Trayvon there after the junior was suspended for 10 days from Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High.
The family has refused to say why Trayvon was suspended, only offering that he had violated school policy.
It wasn't that long ago I was was in high school. I knew lots of guys who got detention but very few that were suspended and even then it was 1-3 days. I can't imagine what Trayvon did to get suspended for 10 days.
But he liked Skittles so I'm sure he was a good kid.

Yes, "murders" is the wrong word. I think "kills" is what I meant there.

Charles, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just feel strongly about this case, and yes I pontificate, but don't most people? You have to give me this - at least I pontificate on topic. I should have included the standard disclaimers: IANAL, FWIW, my $0.02, etc. Maybe I'll make a sig line with those.
Anyway, in the interest of avoiding further temperature spikes, I'm done posting in this thread until there is an actual decision by the authorities on what, if anything, to do with Zimmerman.

The shooter was an idiot plain and simple. His actions only do a diservice to the rest of us--especially if this guy had a CHL. This kid did not approach him--the shooter did. If he did fear for his life why did he not call 911. This idiot thinks his participation in a neighborhood watch program gives him the right to enforce laws. I hope they throw the book at him. I also hope his stupid action doesn't cost the rest of us our rights to possess a firearm. I appoligize if this offends some of the shooter supporters out there.

An article in the Chicago Tribune says that he was suspended for 5 days because of tardiness.

I think its ironic that they suspend a student from school for not showing up on time.
Michelle Kypriss wrote:"He was extremely creative," said Michelle Kypriss, Trayvon's English teacher at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in Miami. "He just loved building things. He really was intrigued by how things worked."
She described Trayvon, a junior, as an A and B student who majored in cheerfulness.
How's that for creative writing? They didn't have that major when I went to school.

Umm, he did call 911. I think before you pass judgment on this, you need to read all of the posts, the news articles and listen to the tapes from his call to police and the other 911 call tapes. While I agree from the info that we have there probably could have been things that were done differently and it sounds like there were some mistakes made in approaching the guy and engaging him, we don't know enough to say that the man who shot him wasn't justified because he was attacked by the teen. All of the facts should come out of the investigation. And, since none of us are conducting that investigation, we have to wait an see what the findings are.

To be accurate Mr. Zimmerman called Sanford Police Department non emergency line, not 911. Maybe just a technicality, but if he considered this a threat to himself or the neighborhood worthy of police intervention with the potential for armed conflict (I know that may be supposition on my part, but he does have a weapon with him) I wonder why he wouldn't call 911? He has contacted the police some 46 times in the last 15 months. No details on how many were emergency 911 calls.

You're right, in a strange way. If it was a white teen who was shot, we wouldn't be having this conversation now. It probably would have stopped after 2-3 pages and laid dormant until there was more information.
However, because the teen is black, the racists are out in full force claiming there must be some racial motivation behind the shooting, racial motivation for the police decision to not arrest the local resident whose story matches the evidence, and so on.

It seems to me that "Mother Jones" is asking pertinent questions. ITMT, how did a Latino end up with the surname Zimmerman?

An article that I read said that the family was "bi-racial".
