But Could they use some of that new technology that was allowing folks to hunt from the internet? I guess its OK that its real expensive because the taxpayer isn't really paying for it. The Department of Homeland Security is!!

This sort of thing gets my dander up in a bad way. A paintball marker oughta make short work of that lens, without causing damage (I don't mind destroying these stupid cameras, but the local gov't will charge the repairs/replacement back to the citizens in the form of taxes, which I do mind).

Yeah, I hate speeding cameras, too.

Its either this, or someone sometime is going to overload the heck out of these poles around our cities and the whole show is going to come down with a bang...

Chicago already has thousands of security cameras in use by businesses and police—including some equipped with devices that recognize the sound of a gunshot, turn the cameras toward the source and place a 911 call.

Recognize a gunshot? But I thought guns were illegal in Chicago!

But seriously, if people aren't monitoring others through this system, how can it possibly be reliable? Pattern recognition is all well & good for identifying a vehicle or a license plat, but they're claiming that this system can detect illegal activity and alert police.

This sounds like its one step from law enforcement by robots with AIs capable of replacing human beings. Pretty SciFi!

We already have them in Dallas as well.......

But they are not for traffic as that one appears to be.

The ones in Dallas are only for observation in high crime areas and it is a test project that may get bigger and may not.

I don't think the bubble gum lights would last long on top of the ones in Dallas. Maybe that's what the DPD thought as well when starting this program.

Not to highjack your thread, but I read a story last week about the BAZILLION cameras they have all over England and the police are only solving about 20% of crimes. The writer's point was the money spent on all the cameras would likely do more good if it was spent on something else, like more officers on patrol.

Stop for a box on a pole talking to me? Don't think so, I can't hear to well anymore anyway.

OSHA regulations prohibit the following uses of flexible cords (and extension cords):

· as a substitute for fixed wiring (i.e. permanent)
