First speeding warning ever...

A funny story:

Last Saturday, I was driving back home from Colorado Bend State Park with my girlfriend and her son. We were doing 78 in a 70 zone when a cop pulled me over. The tale that a CHL can often get you out of a speeding ticket came to mind as I pulled it and my drivers license out of my wallet. I handed both to him, and he asked where my pistol was. I told him that it was under the passenger seat, locked. He had an odd look on his face, then asked if I always keep it there. I replied that I forgot to put it back on when I left the park. He told me to slow down because of the deer, and then he went back to his car to write a warning ticket.

When he came back, he said that I should keep the gun on my side, because if he needed assistance on the side of the road, it would take too long to get it out of the locked box!

So after he went back to his car, I pulled the holster out, held it out the window to show him that I was rearming, and re-armed myself. I've been waiting for my first LEO encounter ever since I got my CHL. While I've been anticipating a nicer attitude from cops, I didn't expect that.

Note: This is not an endorsement of the idea that a CHL is a get-out-of-a-speeding-ticket pass.

I don't know where you were stopped but I do like the LEO way of thinking and I do support his thoughts on CHL backing him up as a last resort!

And as we all know that works both ways for him to back us up if ever needed!

You know that you don't have to disarm to go to a state park, right?

I know, but I do have to disarm before going swimming. ;-) That was the last thing we did. I forgot to rearm after changing.

Yeah, the LEO had a great attitude. It was on 183 somewhere between Lampasas and 29.

If you got his name or badge number send a nice letter to the department for this officer's file. If not send a thank you letter to the department in general. You know officers rarely get an 'atta boy' but always get complaints.

Good idea. Maybe I'll do that.

No you don't; you just have to clean and oil it REALLY well afterward!! BTDT when I was an LEO and had a potential drowning victim. Luckily we carried S&W stainless Model 66's at the time, so wasn't too hard to get it cleaned up.

It is really nice to hear officers that appreciate those LAC's and know they can be a lifesaver in a bad situation. I second the commendation letter idea.

You held your gun out the window to show him you were arming yourself?

As innocent as your actions might have been by you, ill respectfully call you CRAZY! :)

No he said he held his holster out the window. i dont care how the stop went. it prob. would have gone down hill pretty quick if you wave a gun out the window at a LEO!!

I would have waited until the stop was over and I was alone again, but that is just me.
