The interesting thing will be the response from gun manufacturers.

Will they, or some of them, simply pull out of the CA market?

Will they start building "49 state guns" and "CA guns"?

Or will they implement microstamping on all of their guns to maintain a single production process flow?

I think that companies that decide to serve the CA market by implementing microstamping will see some backlash from gun owners in other states, similar to what happened to S&W when they signed the consent decree (surrendering to Clinton's lawsuit) back in the 90's. I suspect this will happen even if they offer non-microstamped guns to other states.

I would favor a boycott of any company that went along with CA on this.

I would like to see what they do when their LE agencies are unable to buy guns.

But in a spirit of compromise, I think I could agree with having all LE guns microstamped while the gun companies simply don't sell to the non-LEO market.

I suppose that we'd be open to a new identity fraud if we don't carefully police our brass at the range. How patient would LE be with you if your casings are at some crime scene? This is bad!

It also points out my favorite problem with gun control, it’s always a defective compromise.

It would be more effective, from both sides of the court room to make manufactures create a distinguishable rifle pattern. Such design is actually easy with the CNC tools of today and it places the bullet from the body to a gun, not a case that may or may not have fired the fatal shot.

I don’t like the ideal at all, but I disapprove of following a half way solution.

Consider, a gang banger could simply bring shells from multiple guns and just toss them on the ground and they did their drive by.

I object not only because the concept is defective, but the approach is also the worst way to try the concept.

To some extent, these things have already occurred. Any manufacturer who wants to sell a gun in California has to submit a sample of each specific model for destructive testing. Many manufacturers offer "California Compliant" versions of their firearms. Most major manufactures also include reduced capacity, 10-round magazine with guns sold in states that have banned full capacity magazines and the also will include a fired case in states that require it.

try buying Kel-Tec pistols in CA.... then look at the offerings from Skyy. Guess who is opting for the CA market.
