Soon I will be doing 12 weeks of student teaching at a Richardson ISD high school. I have a CHL. I intend to take the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (our bus and rail mass transit system) to and from the school to which I am assigned.

I would love to be able to carry on the ride to and from the school. The ride is over an hour each way and involves transfers. I would be traveling when it's dark, both in the morning and probably in the evening. However, for obvious reasons, I would not be able to carry into the buildings of the school. Is there a solution?

Is there a site that allows people who live next to public schools to coordinate efforts, so that those who work at public schools but take public transportation can stop by in the morning and evening and pick up and drop off (respectively) their handgun? I don't mind walking/bicycling somewhere nearby twice a day...

Or is there another solution?

The only way I see around this issue is to find a place (friendly gunshop, friends house, etc) nearby the school to store your gun during the day (slim possibility), OR to get permission from the school (written, by an administrator) to store the pistol somewhere in their facility (nearly impossible). One final alternative might be some type of public storage facility (lockers in a nearby bus station, etc) although disarming and rearming anywhere in public would be a bit of a pain.

If any of these slim possibities actually work out for you, be SURE you use a securely (locked, with you retaining the key) storage method while you're not in control of your gun.

I'm not seeing a good solution. Velocity covered all of the marginal ones that I know of...

Would a police sub-station be a possiblity for storage?

I won't know for certain until January, but on my application I put down Berkner High School as my top choice. I don't recall what my second choice is. My third choice is JJ Pearce.

Park a $200 junker in the parking lot, put a gun safe in it and put the gun there every morning. Might be some problems with the school thinking it is abandoned.

That would be great, but wouldn't that still be a violation of the Texas (not to mention the federal GFSZA) law if the lockers are inside a school building?

I guess there is just no way public transportation could be taken out of consideration, and private conveyance (car) be the main mode of commuting???

The answer becomes elementary (pardon the pun) at that point...

Spending an hour on a bus(es) each way, doesn't bring great joy or harmony to my workday...

Yes, it would, that is why I said Ideally. That is one of the solutions we need to be working on. While I can agree that schools need an extra level of protection I believe responsible adults (at least teachers and administrators) should be allowed to enter a campus with a gun.
