Mailed my stuff 9/4 got a return receipt 9/5. Is it worth giving them a call tomorrow?

Absolutely, you need to call as soon as possible. I had my application placed in the incorrect receiving date "pile" and if I had not called to follow up on my 60th day I still would be waiting. As always be polite and nonconfrontational in dealing with the processing clerks. I hope that you will not experience any further delays. Best of luck.

Calling doesn't seem to work. The number is busy, or I get a message saying don't dial 1 800, just the number. So I dial it as a local number, and get a message saying I have reached an invalid extension, and then it hangs up on me.

I sent an email early this morning, nothing yet.
