The Austin police SWAT team is surrounding a North Austin gun shop this morning because a burglar might still be inside the store.

It will interesting to see what is going on.
As a teenager...I spent many, many hours in that store. I lived just a few blocks away, and went to school with one of the McBride boys.
Hope everyone is alright and that it turns out to be a simple burglary.

OK, possible (overnight)
burglary (still) in progress.
I was wondering how fast the Statesman had gotten, that they were able to report a
robbery in progress. They're generally over pretty quickly

Throw in the gas and then send in the dogs, but then again this is Austin PD.

I would't be suprised if the burglar was that guy who was on the rooftop of a parking garage a few days ago.

I have fond memories of McBrides. Back in the late 60's, early 70's as a cash-strapped student at UT (I just dated myself) I frequently stopped in to drool! In fact, that is where I bought my first handgun (which I still have) which I almost needed just hours later for my mother's and sisters' protection (well prior to CHL).

Same time period I was a regular there!

Man, we're the old guys....aren't we?
Don't know about now, but at that time.. "Jack" and his family members lived right next door to the store. Of course, the store has gotten bigger over the years.
no burglar found

The mysterious burglar who hit McBrides Gun Shop in Central Austin early this morning appears to have escaped, police said.
At about 2 p.m. Austin police said they had searched the store at 2915 San Gabriel St. and found no one. Officials had surrounded the store with SWAT team since before 5 a.m. this morning.
The store owners and police are taking inventory at the store to see what is missing and hoping to examine video from the security cameras.
“We have no leads right now unless there is video,” said police spokesman Joe Munoz. Police were called after the store’s security company alerted them to a possible burglar in the store.
“We’re searching every nook and cranny and there are a lot of them” in the store, he said. He declined to say how police searched the store.
Lamar Boulevard near the store was reopened at 2:15 p.m. Lamar was closed between 29th and 31st streets. Other streets in the area were closed and a few buildings in the immediate area were evacuated.
Munoz said the security alarm company for McBride’s called police at 4:36 a.m. saying that someone had broken into the store. When police arrived, Munoz said, officers saw that guns were strewn everywhere and boxes of ammunition had been opened. Officers backed out and called in the SWAT team, Munoz said. The security company told police that motion detectors were showing movement in the store, indicating that someone could still be in there.

Try going after anybody that used the 9 hours thet police were camped out outside this store to commit crimes elsewhere in town.
On the plus side, there's a good chance they'll get a tip out of soimeone who saw the burglar having a giggle-fit while watching the live coverage.

Hmm...something super-secret, no doubt. I'm guessing they all linked arms and skipped down the aisles singing "This is the song that never ends" for half an hour until they figured that nobody could stay hidden with that going on.

Are they sure the ransacked-looking gunshop wasn't just a Sci-fi Channel promo?

So be sure to give them plenty of time to decide exactly how they want to deal with the cops. Don't risk catching them off guard with decisive action or anything.

All I will say is that the crazy son of a gun (no pun intended) that broke in there was either lucky or smart. Why? Because as a lifelong customer and former employee, I can assure you he would not have made it 10 feet into the gun room before catching a chest full of lead.
