I've been in need of a good mag carrier for many months now. The problem was, it seemed like no one made one I wanted it. I wanted a black leather open top OWB mag carrier, with belt slots. The closest I found to what I wanted was this:



I've seen that others have the same complaint as I do -- they don't want their magazines angled in opposite directions, but that seems to be the defacto standard for open top double mag carriers. That, and even those seem to run between $55 and $85 (the price of the carrier above) - way too high in my mind for a simple mag carrier. Luckily, I have a friend whose wife does leather work. I gave her the image above as a starting point, requesting that the mags be 3/4" apart and parallel to each other, standing straight up. I gave her belt size and color, and 2 weeks later I have the exact mag carrier I want, custom made for a mere $30. Here it is:



So far I am very pleased. The mags ride nice and snug up against my side without digging in, and it keeps a nice hold on the mags.

I normally carry two single carriers, one on one side of the belt loop and one on the other. They feel better to me than any double I have owned (and that is several) because they can move individually as necessary when I sit down or whatever and I can move them manually if needed.

I use a Wilson double mag pouch (http://www.wilsoncombat.com/l_mag_pouches.asp) which does hold the mags vertical and parallel. The belt loop, though, is a foldover affair that you can't see from the photos on Wilson's website; the leather piece behind the mags extends up, and then is folded over backward and and secured to form the belt loop. The upside is that the tension on the mags remains consistent, despite belt tension; the downside is that the mags aren't held as close to the body as they could be. Too, the flap is a single piece of leather, so you have to place it completely fore or aft of a belt loop. If a square were cut out of the the flap so that two, separate loops resulted, it would be more convenient.

The one you had made looks pretty good. If she can make them easily and turn a profit at 30 bucks, maybe she should think about a part-time, home-based business.

She has a day job working for a leather company, and does work for friends and acquaintances in her off time. I think this is her first gun-related project, and I had to give her 2 of my Hi-Power mags and some snap caps for her to work with while she made it. She had a little difficulty getting the leather on the front to form without pre-made forms and a heavy press to work with. I agree that she could probably do gunleather work, but on any kind of scale, she'd probably need to get forms for specific guns and mags. Otherwise, every project would require her customers to send in the equipment that they wanted leather work done for.
