This is not about guns. Not at all. It's about persuading parents to give consent to have their homes searched.

What inner city parent isn't afraid their kids won't either be a victim of, or get caught up in, gun violence?

So when the police come to the door and express concern, they'll probably get consent. "Mrs. Johnson, we know your son is a good kid, but we heard that someone has pressured him to hold their gun. They're bad kids, gang members, and probably threatened him. To catch them and keep your son safe, we need to find that gun. You don't mind if we come in and look, do you?"

Unlike the exclusionary limits of a search warrant (police can't look for an elephant in the dresser draw), a consent search doesn't have limits. Drugs, suspected stolen property, etc., would all be fair game unless the parents know enough to limit or revoke consent.

Most of the populace have no idea what they are doing when they consent to searches like this.

I read the story. If anyone truly believes that the BPD are only looking for guns and will not do anything but confiscate the gun, they will have a rude awakening.
