Woman Murdered Opening Store

This happened at the Greenspoint Mall. For those not familiar with the area it's not the best and has gotten the nick name "Gunspoint Mall". Something that can be taken from this is that the police can't be everywhere. Something not mentioned in the article is that there is a Houston Police Station located inside the mall, and there is a Police Academy (the one I went to in-fact) right across the Beltway. So everyday when this thing is open there are a million light blue and white law enforcement uniforms walking around! Before I even read the article I knew what mall it was.
Man Kills Girlfriend, Self in Houston Lingerie Store
Tuesday, November 27, 2007

HOUSTON
— A man shot his girlfriend and then killed himself as she was opening a lingerie store in a Houston mall Tuesday, police said.

The man apparently confronted the woman as she was opening the security gate over the store in the Greenspoint Mall, a few miles from George Bush Intercontinental Airport, said Houston Police Lt. Albert Mihalco. The store showed signs that the two struggled before the woman was shot in the head.

The man apparently killed himself, Mihalco said.

Most stores were still closed when police received a report of a shooting just before 10 a.m.

Mall employee Deborah White said she was about to raise the security gate that covered the Ashley Stewart store where she worked when a security guard ran down the mall corridors, pounding on gates and doors and telling everyone to evacuate.

"I just left my coat and got out," White said. About a dozen people left the mall with her, mostly store employees.

Greenspoint is a pit, but this kind of thing can happen anywhere. It's not like the maniac was worried about getting caught.

I have to agree with Jim.

I always pass that area. Greenspoint is a hotspot now in Houston. Sad as it is.

Anyone know if the mall there is posted 30.06?

You're right--it can, and does, happen everywhere.
We've heard numerous tales of robbing and attempted abductions or rapes in the Galleria parking lot/garage.
Where there are money and sheep, you will find the prowling wolves. Be watchful.

I sense a lot of sarcasm in this thread...

Amazing how in the last two days we've had similar "mall" shooting incidents in two different states...

I predict lots of online shopping this year! Why bother with the uncertanties of the "mall" culture...

Stevie, you are so correct. My family and I avoid the malls like the plague. We shop online and save the gas and the sales tax in most instances. We only frequent locals that do not post 30.06 and we carry everywhere. My prayers go out to the victims family.

Gone are the days when the worst things you had to look for going to the mall was being designated the 'package keeper' and forced to sit out in the corral in the mall while the women folk shopped, or getting your car dinged in the parking lot.

Greenspoint, Gulfpoint, and sharpstown are on my "speed past as fast as I can" list.

Channel 2 is reporting today that the shooter didn't know the victim, but was picked at random.

http://www.click2houston.com/news/14715790/detail.html

No explanation was given for why the victim was initially reported as a girlfriend.

It also says the shooter was confronted by security before the shooting, but gives no reason why he wasn't stopped at that point.

Probably because a murder suicide against a stranger is really bizarre.

Ohhhh, Mr. Kottar!!! I know, I know!!!

Because the "security" is not given any bullets to put into their imaginary guns...

Sorry I couldn't resist... ;-)

In today's Chronicle, it says security backed off when he grabbed the victim as a hostage.
