Man reportedly shoots self, concocts fish tale, comes clean. No charges filed.

I guess the Galveston County DA's office is busy with other stuff these days.

I can only guess that the DA's office figured that shooting himself was punishment enough. They really are tied in knots with the "Baby Grace" prosecution.

police became suspicious when he said their names were "Smith and Wesson"...

someone arrest him before he breeds and his genes' infect the pool.

I talked to an officer about this case. (We're members of the gun club.) He said the guy wasn't arrested because the DA's office didn't approve charges at the time.

They could press charges when the complete report is in.

It's too bad they never codified the concept of felony stupid. Some people probably should be arrested and locked up just because they are a danger to themselves. There does seems to be a rash of felony stupid these days too. You had the officers down in the Corpus area, the guy at ASC on Wednesday, and I just read about a truly tragic case of a guy who'd just signed on to be a deputy trainee with his local LE agency, "accidently" killing his wife.

Ten days after the self-inflicted gunshot wound, a drive-by shooting occured in the same neighborhood. No one was injured. Two men were arrested within minutes.

Nice neighborhood with a view of the bayou.

I think you should be required to pass an IQ test before purchasing a firearm... as well as before having a child... but apparently that's fascism

Actually, yes it is. Ever hear of eugenics? A practice put into play during the fascist days of Nazi Germany. There is a big difference between intelligence and proper training. A person with an IQ of 160 can still ignorant of proper gun handling. You're also making the statement that those with a low IQ should have the ability to defend themselves and loved ones against imminent danger taken away. Proper training in the use and handling of a firearm is something even a slow person can receive. The same goes for parenting.

It goes back quite a bit further than that. It was first put forth by Sir Francis Galton, based on the recently published works of his cousin, Charles Darwin. Among eugenicism's most famous advocates was Margaret Sanger, founder of Planned Parenthood. Abortion and sterilization of the "lower classes" wasn't just based on concern for women's health; it also fit her goal of cleaning "undesireable sorts" out of the gene pool.

OK, give me some more time; I am still working on my handling techniques.

Seriously, I have several friends who are MENSA members that I wouldn't trust driving my dog to the vet. These folks may be highly intelligent in some means, but street smart with moxy they ain't. However, I have seen some of the not-so-bright bubba's in the Ozark hills where I grew up that can shoot the eye out of a squirrel at 50 yards with open sights. I would go hunting with them any day of the week and know I would be safe. Their proper training came from their pappy's teaching them at a young age and making sure they did things right. As was said, it all boils down to proper training.
