HB 1839 requires concealed handgun license (CHL) holders to take a continuing education course to
renew their CHL every 10 years instead of every five years.av
I found this on the DPS website concerning new laws that went into effect Sept. 1,2007. Has anyone else seen this ? :read: I heard that they were going to be renewed every 5 years starting on Jan 1,2008. If this new law is the case , when I renew my CHL in 4 years, it will be valid for 10 years instead of 5, correct ?
Thanks ~
Tony. :clapping: :woohoo

You will have to renew every five years, but you can skip the course on the 3rd, 5th, etc. renewals. Look here:

Not quite.

The change from 4 year license to 5 year licenses was made some time back to coincide with the NICS exemption qualifier being that a background check be made at least every five years.

What is new with HB1839 is that 3rd and later renewals occurring after Sept. 1, 2007 do not require the course to be retaken. You must still submit your renewal to DPS and your license will only be good for the five year term. IOW, it allows for taking the class every other renewal.
