I own a Glock 23,and I went to Academy and decided to purchase a case of Federal Hydroshock ammo.Now I've heard that these might be considered armour piercing .Are these legal to carry or not?

The source you heard that from was mistaken. They are not armor piercing rounds, and yes, they are legal to carry.

They are legal. They are NOT Armor Piercing. They are an older design and not considered in the "top" tier of hollow point bullets by most people, but they are still a very serviceable option if you do your part. And their availability might make them the correct choice for you.

dont think academy would sell if they were illegal

thanks guys,I knew they were legal,I just wanted to make sure and I heard that from a buddy of mine,but I also read on a website,they were explaining what type of ammo does what and it mentions that hydroshock has some armour piercing ability.

Hydra shoks are older technology. If you want the latest from federal you need the HST's. Academy seems overpriced on their ammunition. I ordered some Federal Tactical LE HST's from Ammotogo.com for 23.00 for a box of 50 (.45 cal) which is a pretty good deal IMHO, since my academy was selling Hydra shoks for 20.00 for a box of 20 rounds. Even with shipping, I came out way ahead of what Academy was selling them for.

I think every single thing is in error in that listing.

Hydroshock =Hydra as in many headed creature not water.

These have a wadcutter shaped lead jacket around a steel pin. No, It is a rounded hex shape, the pin is lead and part of the core.

The jacket expands as a wadcuttter, and the pin allows some Armour piercing ability. No the expansion is at least double the size of a wadcutter, and has cutting edges. The center pin is for directing matter outwards to spread the petals of the Hydra shape.


To use Hydroshock rounds a gun needs custom Porting (150 euro) or its reliability drops one class.
Absolutely not. They work fine in any barrel for their respective calibers.

I believe you may have meant "ammotogo.com." I once made the same error, hit "ammo2go" and suffered several pop-ups that appeared to be virus or other rouge invitations.

Federal HydraShoks are not armor-piercing in the slightest. They are an expanding round designed to deliver maximum damage to the target and minimize overpenetration. An AP round is simply designed to make holes in the target whatever the target is wearing or hiding behind.

HydraShoks work based on a modified hollow-point that makes it more likely the round will expand as designed and not fragment, even if it goes through bone. That means the round expands fully and stays in one piece to make the biggest hole possible, which if placed correctly will more quickly incapacitate a human target. They aren't even really deservng of the moniker; hydrostatic shock sufficient to cause damage to tissue that has not been contacted by the bullet is present only in high-power rifle rounds. A handgun quite simply does not have the speed to induce HS.

Thought that price you got on HST was good and I want some, but ammotogo.com is not a real site. Anyone know the address?
