I just got my first tumbler....a Lyman 1200 Turbo. I was wanting to know, how much of the Nu-Finish polish do you use? Do you add it everytime you add brass or just when you change the media?

I didn't use to add anything to the media, but recently got a bottle of Nu-Finish. I filled half a capful of it and diluted 1/2 with mineral spirits. Seemed to work out pretty good, you might want some more with that big ol tumbler.
I'm considering tumbling outside from now on though, the stuff stinks up the house.

I added about a cap full.....run for 2hrs....and I havnt noticed a difference in the finish other than it is slicker than before, but doesnt have a more polished finish

I just realized that I omitted to mention some other variables with my tumbler. I had a Frankford Arsenal tumbler from Midway, and it quit working after only 3 weeks. So I bought another one, a Berry's tumbler and sent the other one back for a refund.
This one tumbles a lot more aggressively. I used to use only corn cob media, but with my most recent batch I put in maybe 1/3 of walnut media. Seemed to clean faster and give me shinier brass, but I can't say for sure is it's the tumbler, media or polish that made the difference, or a combination of those elements.
I'm very much a newbie at reloading. I'm sure the veterans will have some tips on how to make your brass shine.

I don't measure mine, I just squirt some in... but 1 oz sounds about right. I use DuPont liquid polish in walnut media (reptile bedding) from the feed store.

Here's my case cleaning procedure:

I use a Lyman 1200 pro.

I have 10 nesquick containers with basically just enough media (5 walnut/5 corncob) for tumbling.

First I tumble for 1.5 to 2 hours using walnut hull media with jewelers rouge to clean the cases. I haven't had to add more jewelers rouge yet and probably will actually replace with new media before adding new rouge.

Then I tumble for 1.5 to 2 hours using corncob media with polish (cheap car polish from dollar store) and 2 dryer sheets torn into strips. I add a squirt of more polish when media looks dry (white) probably every 5 times I use that media.

one day I was real busy with other tasks and ran the walnut media for about 4 hours and the corncob for almost 6 hours. Boy was that brass bright and shiny.

I tried the nu-finish car polish in walnut media, but came out with a walnut mud inside some of my casings.
I'm not sure where I went wrong.

This happened to me using Rooster Bright, so I changed my procedure. When I change the walnut media and add polish, I put on surgical gloves and pour about 1/4 to 1/3 of the new media into the tumbler along with the polish. I mix it until there are no lumps of polish. I then add about the same amount of walnut media and mix it a little more. I then pour in the remaining walnuts and run the tumbler for about 3 minutes before adding brass.

Using this procedure, I've never had any problems. It only takes about 2 or 3 minutes; a lot less time than it takes to dig the "mud" out of the brass.

BTW, I'm going to switch to car polish, since Rooster Bright we up dramatically on the price of a gallon and the shipping is absurd. How does the Nu-Finish work?

I'm not sure how it turns out when you do it correctly, but most of the people here seem to like it.

I know a lot of people use liquid polish, but I don't. I only use walnut and vary the time by how dirty the cases are, and how old the media is. My cases come out clean and shiney.
I don't use polish because I don't want to have anything in the case mouth that could change how tight the brass holds on to the bullet. I have never heard of a problem being attributed to having polish in the case mouth, but it just seems like an unnessasary step to me.

Using white rice as the media, it seems to work fine, but then I'm not exactly the best reference since I usually start a batch and either go to bed or leave for work then come home 12 hours later and go to bed, and it runs anywhere from 12 to 30 hours. Probably, given that length of time, it would be clean with just the rice alone.

The shinier it is, though, the easier it is to find in the grass and sand where I normally shoot.
