My wife and I are proud to announce that our son Jonathan has enlisted in the US Army and is scheduled to ship out to Basic Combat Training on Feb 20. Due to his score of 98 on the ASVAB, he is assured of training as a Signal Support Systems Technician upon succesful completion of BCT. He plans to try and qualify for the Marksmanship Unit.

Although I have been razzing him that he only signed up so he didn't have to wait till he was 21 to get his TX CHL, I am very proud that he has chosen this diffcult yet honorable path. (and his hair is shorter now and of course soon to be even shorter yet) :patriot:

Please tell your son Thank You for serving on my behalf. :patriot:

My 20 year old son just returned from a year in Korea and is awaiting deployment to Iraq in June.
When he left for Basic Training 20 months ago he was a boy and he has returned home a man.

Your pride will continue to grow, I guarantee it.

Hooah I was a signal soldier for 4 years! He will LOVE Fort Gordon. It's a small base (about 3 brigades and one Air Farce Wing) and Augusta is big so it's not an Army town at all. I loved it there. I would have stayed in the Army had they let me re-enlist with the option to stay there. He should do all of his AIT there. Tell him to not come in first, not come in last, and don't volunteer for anything during BCT. The un-noticed path is the absolute best way to go..... :thumbs2:

edit to add: if he would like more info on BCT, Ft Gordon (AIT) or where some good duty stations are let me know by PM. I was in recently.

I think your son is leaving for basic training in the morning and I just wanted to make sure that you guys knew we would be praying for him and for you guys! I can only imagine that it will be difficult to send him off! Please tell him thank you very much for his service from us!

Please tell Jonathan the Flintknapper family is proud of him too!

We are behind him all the way! :patriot:

(and his hair is shorter now and of course soon to be even shorter yet)
P.S., I never judge a man by the length of his hair. The measure of a man will always be found much deeper than that.

Jonathan left Houston yesterday for Fort Benning in GA for BCT. As soon as we have the exact info to send him mail I will give it (via PM) to anyone who wants to write him.

He was pulled out of a large group of recruits all carrying the same Army Future Soldier bag and searched by TSA. They made him throw away his shaving cream that I had bought him Monday night because it was larger than 3.2 Oz (it was 3.5). This really upset him because he had used it for first time in the morning and said it worked great and he liked it better than the aerosol gel he had be using.

He and I got a chance to talk Monday afternoon as we were waiting for the shuttle to pick him up at recruiting station. He really wants to qualify for the Marksmanship unit and plans to spend every free moment he can on the range improving his shooting skills using army supplied ammo. I can't think of too many things I would prefer my tax dollars be spent on more than ammo for soldiers.

Greg:
I didn't get the actual name of the base where he will do AIT but it is in Georgia so probably Fort Gordon. I gave him basically the same advice.

I was impressed w/ his shooting & safety at the PSC Day last Sept. I am sure we will continue to be impressed by his service in uniform. He can shoot up my tax $$$$s if he wants to. :thumbs2: :fire :fire :fire :fire :fire

Got back from Fort Benning this weekend after attending Jonathan's graduation from BCT last Thursday.

He's is now at Fort Gordon doing AIT as a 25-U (I think that's what he said). :patriot:
