proof of residence help!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site and so far am pretty impressed, informative and fun! Ok on to my questions. I moved to Austin just under 4 months ago from DC, before that sunny Glasgow, Scotland! I am a green card holder. Looking at taking the CHL. Depending on what I read the time for residence ranges from 3 to 6 months before becoming eligible. Can anyone clarify this? Another things is that the only thing with my name and address on is the mortgage statements, would this be OK for proof of residence? Utility bills are all in my wife's name. Don't have any pay stubs as I still work for a company based in the UK. One last thing, any recommendations for CHL class in Austin area? Thanks for any help!

I'm not up on the Green Card aspect, but I believe 90 days in the U.S. is sufficient. As for Texas, there is no set period for a residency requirement. If you have a Texas Driver's License then you're good to go. I also suspect that the mortgage statement would be proof, so long as it's for the address of your home. I haven't had this one come up in any of my classes, so I'm guessing.
Welcome to TexasCHLforum.
Chas.

Bills as proof of residency is a requirement for a resident alien to purchase a firearm but I have never heard of similar evidence being required to qualify for a CHL.
As Mr. Cotton says, a Texas Drivers license should be sufficient but you have to turn in your skean dhu.

Welcome to Texas, fellow former European.
The only thing "extra" I sent in with my application was a photocopy of my Resident card. The application packet had an extra sheet of instructions stating this requirement when I got it, I guess since I did the application online and they thus knew I ain't from around here. I got my CHL without any problems.
90 days proof of residency is correct for firearm purchases. It's a real pain if you run into something you want to buy and didn't think to pack a stack of papers with you to prove residency. I used to keep 90 days of pay stubs with me all the time, but last time I bought a gun the dealer (Schramm's in Mesquite) said it wasn't good enough, which is peculiar since the ATF website explicitly lists pay stubs as acceptable proof.

Welcome to Austin! Where are you taking your CHL class?
I'm sure we'll be having another Austin get-together in the near future, and we'd be happy to see you there. Enjoy the forum, and again - welcome!

using a site called chl-texas.com, ran by a husband and wife team. Had first part last night and thought it was pretty good so far. Got the rest of the class today.

I considered them when I was looking for a class. I opted to go with KR Training instead, as they also offered an all-inclusive course (including fingerprints, notarization, and photos) and did everything on a single day. Also, the instructor KR Training uses (
Tom Schaefer) has his own range (at his own house and land, it seemed), and the classroom is probably 100 feet away. It was relatively laid back and very informative.
The KR Training site is located at
http://www.krtraining.com .
As an aside, I wouldn't go with the CHL-Texas folks solely based on how incredibly annoying their website is. That stupid signup form script that follows your mouse around and the embedded audio file irritated me to no end.

Finished the course and passed! I will agree that the website is pretty bad but the course was pretty good. They included everything you need to apply and the guy would even go and hand it into DPS for you when finished. The reason I took it was the 2 day course, a one day weekend course didn't really suit my needs. Heard nothing but good things about kt training though maybe try it for my re qual when it comes up!
