Going to Kali.

Hello everyone. Been awhile. Life has been calling me away from the computer a little too much lately. (Maybe that's a good thing?)

Anywho- I'm driving to Los Angeles next week, and I'd like to carry at least through New Mexico and Arizona, but didn't know if I could just box the pistol up on the California border and stow it away in the trunk of the car. Is that possible? Should I just leave it at home?

BTW- I'll be carrying my Kimber Ultra Carry .45. Shouldn't be against any California laws, right?

Thanks!!

I may have answered my own question, but I'd still love some input!

California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

(a) Section 12025 shall not be construed to prohibit any
citizen of the United States over the age of 18 years who resides or
is temporarily within this state, and who is not within the excepted
classes prescribed by Section 12021 or 12021.1 of this code or
Section 8100 or 8103 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, from
transporting or carrying any pistol, revolver, or other firearm
capable of being concealed upon the person, provided that the
following applies to the firearm:
(1) The firearm is within a motor vehicle and it is locked in the
vehicle's trunk or in a locked container in the vehicle other than
the utility or glove compartment.
(2) The firearm is carried by the person directly to or from any
motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while carrying the firearm,
the firearm is contained within a locked container.
(b) The provisions of this section do not prohibit or limit the
otherwise lawful carrying or transportation of any pistol, revolver,
or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person in
accordance with this chapter.
(c) As used in this section, "locked container" means a secure
container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock,
combination lock, or similar locking device.

Several members are former Californians and one was a police officer there. You should get an answer in time.

They have a high-capacity magazine ban, so aside from whether you can have a weapon at all, watch out for that.

MrDrummy - IANAL, but my advice is to keep it unloaded, locked in a TSA case, ammo stored in a different container. Keep it in the trunk in California and don't let anyone search your car without a search warrant. And get back to Texas ASAP! :tiphat:

I regularly carried firearms in my car, in a locked container, not accessibe from the passenger compartment while I was living there and never had a problem. I have been back one time since leaving and carried the same way with no problems. Keep it in a locked case, unloaded, in the trunk and you should be fine.

I think they also ban handguns that do not meet their "safety" requirements. These include drop testing among other things. I seem to see gun ads fom time to time that say, "Approved for California", or, "Not Available in California".

Not sure how this would apply, or if it would apply, to a gun brought into the state by a visitor. Our CA-knowledgeable members will have to take that aspect of it.

FWIW, the gun laws in CA have no basis in any system of ethics or morality that I am familiar with. IMO, many of CA's gun laws are of dubious constitutionality. They go far beyond any sort of "reasonable restrictions".

Living in CA is living in a state of oppression.

FTY - Only applies to handguns approved for sale in California.
