After recently having a background check performed on me for one of my clients, the report indicated my mailing address in college, which got me thinking about how I filled out the CHL application. In the section requiring you to list your residences for the past 5 years, I listed my home address in Dallas for the time period 02/03-05/03 (to fulfill the 5 year requirement). I was actually still in college at that time in Durham, but was not a resident of NC and I had always listed Dallas as my permanent address. Now, I know the form tells you to list college addresses, but seeing as how my address was a PO Box and not a physical address (not to mention I couldn't remember the exact address anyways), I just listed my Dallas address.

Question: could this cause a significant delay in processing, even for just this 3 month potential discrepancy almost 5 years ago? Has anyone "fudged" their residency and had problems with DPS asking for more information?

I never heard of this causing a problem, and I doubt it will in your case.

DPS wants to know your addresses so that they can perform criminal background checks in those counties. If you didn't get in trouble with the law during the period when you were living at college, your address discrepancy is not going to come to light.

It's well established that your parents' home is your residence address when you are school, unless you formally change it.

A commercial background check may actually be more thorough than what DPS does, because a commercial database is going to use records like credit and phone lines.
