How can you miss someone in a hallway with a 12-gauge shotgun?

Pretty much the same way you miss anything: the barrel is not pointing at the target when you pull the trigger.

When returning home, I always go through the door first and make my wife and son follow. If I don't see the dog looking up at me and wagging, I'll know there's a problem.

His age maybe, he's only 24 so he might not have had enough range time. On a side note, did you see the home? I'm not sure what it was like for the rest of you but at 24, I was still paying of school loans to afford a house like he had.

Probably designs video games for a living.
Heck, I'm 56 and can't afford one of them ;)

not to make any judgements one way or the other, but just because he has a seemingly nice house doesn't necessarily mean he is keeping up with payments.

glad he's ok though, but in a hallway with a 12 gauge and missed....maybe he was hit first and couldn't aim properly after that. I know I probably would have soiled my pants.

I can think of a bunch of explanations for the house. The story called him a "homeowner," but you know how reliable the media are. It could be his parents' house. He could have won the lottery. He could be the heir to an oil fortune. His wife could be. I knew a guy in college who was rolling in money because his father had died and he was the beneficiary of a huge insurance policy (BTW, don't let that happen to your kids).

No problem! Their future is secure, as they are all believers ... poor ... but rich where it counts!

The homeowner suffered minor injuries in the shootout, and the intruder fled -- escaping the point-blank shotgun blast.

Whether he hit the guy with the first shot or not, it had the intended consequences ... and nobody died! That's a happy ending in my book!

That's why it's sometimes better if you hear somebody crash in your door to take up a defensive posotion,also sounds like he hesitated to shoot and BG got off first shots,

More evidence that shotguns have to be aimed just like any other gun. Those pellets don't automatically find the target.

I didn't see what kind of choke the shotgun had. At typical inside-the-home distances, even a cylinder bore isn't going to give more than 4" of spread. If it was a duck hunting shotgun, he was effectively shooting a .72 caliber slug, which misses just as easily as a .45 slug.

aside from shooting skill, if you read On Killing, it's very hard from one human to kill another. even in battleground, untrained soldiers may have a firing rate of 40% or less. note the word "firing rate," not shooting AT the enemies. most of soldiers just fire their guns - trying to scare the enemies.

I thought that this forum would be the last place i would have to explain that shotguns do not create 10ft wide cones of death within spitting distance of the barrel.
