Do you have to request a PIN for one to come in the mail? Or do they get sent automatically?

They're sent automatically if you did not start the application online.
People have been reporting over one month's wait for the PIN.

Over a month is too long of a wait IMO, I would give it @ 3 weeks after they recieve your application and just email them. Be sure and supply your application# etc. That's what I did and I got my pin long before it arrived in the mail. But it will come eventually as seamusTX stated.

The pin number seems to be all over the place in terms of when to expect it from DPS. The range seems to be 3-6 weeks. After that if you still haven't received it give them a call just to make sure they've at least entered your application into the system.

I don't know what to believe about the elusive PIN...I started my application online, they sent me the packet, no PIN. I took the class 2/9, mailed it in 2/11, DPS signed for it on the 14th. I was told that it would come in the mail...still no PIN. I talked to a buddy that took the class with me & he said his status changed to "processing application" today (he has a PIN, because he had his CHL but let it lapse for a couple of years).I've given up on the PIN;just waiting for the plastic.

Hooknbullet, do you have copies of the paperwork that DPS sent you after you answered the online questions? If you do look at the paper that basically has your answers on it, name, address, etc. The pin should be on that form.

I feel your pain. It's been over six weeks and I still do not have a PIN.

I submitted my paperwork on 1/28 and my payment cleared on 2/4. My PIN was dated 3/18/2008 and I actually received it on 3/21/2008. That's right around 7 weeks from submission to reciept of the PIN. Oddly enough, my neighbor submitted his paperwork a week after I did and recieved his license in just under 3 weeks. Go figure.

Confirmed - the PIN should have been delivered to you in the packet containing the fingerprint cards, etc. It would be a four-digit alphanumeric in bold near the top of Page 1 of the "instructions" letter.

DPS received my packet 1/28/08
No PIN received, and I sent a couple of e-mails beginning at the end of February just checking for PIN status. From the response, they had not yet issued the PIN and didn't show the packet as being received.
Finally, I called and spent the time waiting on hold today. They tell me that my PIN was mailed to me on 3/20/08 (I didn't receive it today, but it was over Easter Weekend). The representative did tell me that they have finally started the background check. Hopefully, the wait is nearing it's end. In the meantime, just trying different carry combinations and methods around the house.

Got the PIN in the mail; website says the status is the overly generic "Processing Application". Time to settle in and keep from going crazy checking the website for updates...

Congrats on the PIN. I really shouldn't be that long to get it complete, it will just seem like it takes forever for the status to change. But when it does, OH WHAT JOY THERE WILL BE!!!!!!

I called and spoke with a gentleman today (amazingly, no long hold time to speak to a representative). He told me that the prints were good, paperwork was good, and they're just wrapping up the background check. He correctly stated that I'm right at the 60 day point (DPS signed for the packet on 1/28/08) and that it wouldn't be much longer. I'm hoping by mid April. We'll see..........
