I am wondering if there is any truth to the online applications being processed faster than the actual hand written ones. I would hope that since the info is already typed in the system, it would go faster. I understand that this is applying common sense in a world that obviously doesnt have much.WHat is everyone's experince?

I applied online in the last couple of weeks of November, and then took my CHL class afterwards. I hope your's goes faster than mine did. Here's the sequence:
- 12/8 - I take CHL class.
- 12/10 - 2 days later, I send in all paperwork to DPS.
- 12/14 - 4 days later, USPS confirms DPS receipt of my paperwork.
- 1/23 - 39 days later, DPS sends me a letter asking for further information, because I was born outside of the U.S.
- 1/28 - 44 days later, I receive their letter and telephone them. They tell me that my 60-90 day waiting period begins when they receive the additional information.
- 1/29 - 45 days later, I fax to DPS the following items:
- a copy of my birth certificate;
- a copy of my U.S. passport;
- a copy of my Texas driver's license;
- a copy of my SS card;
- a copy of their letter to me; and
- a fax cover sheet asking that, since they had sat on my application for 39 days before even letting me know that they wanted additional information, could they please expedite processing it, now that their information was complete. I phoned them to follow up, and was told again that the 60-90 days begins with the receipt of the additional information.
- 2/23 - license received in mail.
Total elapsed time - 70 days.

In my opinion, online application process only has 2 advantages: it makes it easier if your handwriting is poor and you get your pin# faster. But the later advantage is moot since DPS doesn't update your status promptly. The disadvantages is the state has your money longer till you actually get your plastic. If I had to do it over again, I'd do like everybody else in my class and send in my check with application, forms, fingerprints, and photos.
By the way, my timeline was 86 days from packet received by state till status updated to "Complete". Another 3 days to receive plastic.

I registered online. DPS received my applicaton 2/7. My online status didn't change from "Packet mailed to applicant" to "Processing application" until day 57. Day 75 right now I believe. I haven't had any request for additional information either.

Thats amazing. You should consider yourself lucky. Even with all that additional information they requested, you still had your license in hand in 5 days less than I've had to wait so far.

It took mine 52 days to move from "Packet Mailed to Applicant". Don't know when their 60-90 window begins in their opinion. I called and emailed a few times. The responses were comicable. The best one was when I sent in addtional info requested and inquired 14 days later why my status didn't move to "Processing Application", they responsed with "It takes 10-14 days to receive mail from the outside and get it updated please allow time for processing". Funny that the same day of their response, they updated my status to "Processing Application". Waited 22 more days till application finally complete.
