Hey guys (and gals)....anybody know what the law is for National Forests in New Mexico? I'll be camping out in Red River, NM for a couple of days and I need to know. I checked handgunlaw.us, but it doesn't say "yes" or "no" for New Mexico. The column is just blank.

State parks are off limits in NM. I'm not sure if that affects National Forests in NM.

We have a house in Alto, NM which is surrounded by the Lincoln Nat'l. Forest. I have carried there without issue. However, I only checked the NM laws before doing so and totally forgot to check the fed statutes. I do know that there is quite a bit of deer and elk hunting in the forest. Best bet would be to call the forest headquarters for clarification.

The U.S. Forest Service always assimilates the laws of the state they're in. Their firearms policy would be whatever NM's policy is.

FWIW, NM law:

19.5.2.20 FIREARMS AND BOWS: Visitors shall not possess firearms, including concealed firearms, with a cartridge in any portion of the mechanism or discharge firearms, including concealed firearms, arrows and air or gas fired projectiles, weapons and other devices capable of causing injury to persons or animals or damage or destruction of property in the state parks system, except during designated hunting seasons or in authorized areas. No such activity is allowed within 300 yards of a developed park area or occupied campsite. 19.5.2.20 NMAC does not apply to on duty law enforcement officials.

A national Forrest is not a State park.

Since the forest service advertises hunting in the Carson National Forest near Red River, I would not expect firearms to be banned there.
