Texaco robbery suspect shot by clerk

More Video HOUSTON—At 22, Ash Hussain experienced something on Friday that most men never will.

He shot someone to death.

“I got really scared,� he said. “Wish it hadn’t happened, but it did, unfortunately.�

Hussain was working at a Texaco on I-45 North and West Mt. Houston Road when two men confronted him just before noon.

One man had a gun, and the other had a knife.

Hussain had about $4,500 in cash and a gun of his own.

“First I thought it was a joke,� he said.

But the suspects were serious. They took the money and ran to their car. Hussain followed him, armed with his gun. When one of the suspects pointed a weapon at Hussain, the clerk fired back.

The suspects then jumped out of the car and took off running. Hussain said he didn’t even realize he’d shot one of them.

Kevin Redden saw the commotion and decided to help.

He chased after the men, but fell and hurt his hand.

When he realized one of the suspects needed medical attention, he did what he could.

“He was conscious. I tried to work on him but he expired,� Redden said. “I’m not here to judge somebody. God does.�

While I have no problem with the shooting, am I the only one here who questions why a Texaco employee had $4500.00? That seems a bit excessive for a convenience store.

That's like what? The equivalent of a couple dozen SUVs filling up before heading out of town on 45 for the holiday weekend.

BTW, I'm guessing Mr. Hussain may be a member of a family that owns a Texaco franchise, not an employee of Chevron (which owns the Texaco brand).

Alot of these places cash paychecks.

I agree but most c-stores should have a drop safe and a policy of the max amount of cash they can have in the drawer, usually $200-300 during the day

i worked in a 7-11 MANY years ago and they were very aggressive in loss-prevention not allowing more than $50 at a time


sometimes i will go into a store and look at the open drawer to guess how much is in there.
most of the time its looks like over $2000 .

i imagine that most stores don't properly train or the staff is lazy in following good habits and keeping cash to a minimum

seems to me thats an open invitation to BGs for a quick and easy score (assuming no CHL's nearby)

Even if there are.

I ain't going to war to protect some store's money. It's not like they are going to support me if I need it in the aftermath.

I would only intervene if I thought that innocent life was in danger, especially mine, and that there was no better way of avoiding the threat.
