NEW YORK - Video from a surveillance camera at a Brooklyn, NY, hospital shows a woman dying on the floor of a psychiatric emergency room while people nearby ignore her.

The video was released Monday by lawyers suing Kings County Hospital alleging neglect and abuse of mental health patients at the facility.

The video shows the 49-year-old woman keeling over and falling out of her chair on June 19 and lying facedown on the floor, then thrashing before going still.

About an hour passed before someone realized what was happening and tried to help.

The agency that runs the municipal hospital, the city's Health and Hospitals Corp., fired several staffers as a result.

There were also reports that hospital staff members altered records to indicate the woman was conscious and alert when the video clearly shows she was on the floor in distress.

Police didn't help, doctors didn't help, security didn't help. The woman was totally on her own. This is the society we live in right now. If you rely on strangers to help you, you are fatally underestimating your survivability. I'm not saying everyone here needs an MD so they can perform their own surgeries or emergency medical care, but we DO all need a "stuff happens" plan that doesn't involve the kindness of strangers, and that includes a means of protecting yourself against an assailant.

We as a society are being slowy and methodically indoctrinated to NOT intervene, stand up for yourself and a law abiding, compassionate citizen against crime or other types of outrageous behavior by others...

We will be held in more contempt if we do...

Since this was not an example of how a lawful citizen would defend themselves or some other act in relation to the lawful dispensing of ammunition to stop a threat to ourselves or another...

I can only sit here and wonder if we are too late to reverse this trend...Not that anyone in this specific case would have been able to do something to help this woman survive her ordeal...

I heard she had been waiting for over 24 hours to at least be seen by a professional at that facility before she collapsed and died...I honestly believe the wait in that facility aggravated her condition, and caused her to collapse and die...

I see a big lawsuit looming on this one...And I for one would be very inclined to agree and support the womans family...

Just another example of the sheep, wolf, and sheepdog mentality

What I am wondering is why she was in a psychiatric emergency room if she had a life-threatening medical condition. That is kind of like going to a dentist to get a broken arm treated.

I'm not saying the general public is required to render aid, but those medical staff are and should be thrown in jail.

How would "carrying" have helped her in this situation?
