I have some love handle overhang which makes carrying on the hip dig into my "side walls". I was at the at the range and asked a similar built person what he used and he said a small of back carry. I have extra room back there in my pants anyway so I said why not. It was just a simple soft Uncle Mike's holster so it was only $13 to try it out. I put it on at home and it's pretty comfy. I am waiting for my CHL class so I'm not carrying but around the house to get used to it. So what do you with love handles carry for a holster? Also while I can see on the hip as being easy to get to anyone have a constructive argument on why to not carry in the middle of the back region?

I have a Glock 19 if this helps some of you assist me.

Only problem with small of back is if you fall, you'll understand why they're called SOBs.

Many people who carry SOB also position the weapon incorrectly and sweep their own body with the muzzle when drawing.

I have a 60" waist and I carry IWB my glock 30 with a comptac infidel with ghurka strut at 5ish O-clock. Its perfect, I can't even feel it when I have it on. You might try it. I can draw really fast and safely and it conceals very well.

edit: I don't sag when I wear my pants, I pull them up a little higher than my waist and set my belt tight. I can bend, stretch, and do just about anything and my glock 30 never shows.

edit2: yall may think a guy with a 60" waist is slow but I dare you to a game of football.

I carry IWB at 5 o'clock with no problem. All IWB holsters I have used work well, you will feel a little uncomfortable at first but you will get used to it.

wife carries SOB and is now her preferred method of carry.

Not a valid option for me. I don't have enough rump going on to support the extra weight. Just putting my wallet in my back pocket often makes my pants fall :)

I was going to suggest this also. Although there is a natural curve at the spine, it's not only risky to have a gun there, it's harder, thus slower, to draw. As the old saying goes, everyone behind you has better access to your gun than you do.

Try moving it from a true SOB location more toward 5:00 o'clock posit ion as TexasComputerDude suggested.

Ok so lets say I move it to the 5 position which way should the handle go? Currentally I have a left hand holster but I am right handed. When in the small of the back it goes the other way. I'll also look at the holster mentioned. I was also looking at the smartcarry for another option. Seems like that would help with the spine thing and the others having better access than myself.

That depends on your build and flexibility. You should be able to get a full grip on the pistol while it's in the holster. You should also be able to draw and reholster without pointing the muzzle at yourself.

The handle should be positioned so that your palm is facing your body when you draw. This should prevent sweeping your kidney with the muzzle. It feels more comfortable and natural to have the grip turned so that you slide your hand between the gun and your back, this results in an unsafe draw.

I am also cursed with being somewhat "prosperous" in the beltline (but working on that), and I carry IWB at 8:30 (left handed) just fine with nary a problem

I've got some handles and I carry at about the 2:30 position, just past my....well.....uh....belly....you know...the dunlop part. That's the most comfortable for me and allows easy access when carrying and better concealment (for me) than at 5:00. I carry either a Bersa Thunder 380 in a Comp-Tac Ghurka or an XD9 Service in a Comp-Tac CTAC.

54 inch waist here, 335 lbs. I carry IWB with no problems. It's very comfortable.

Go with a quality holster and make sure to get the 'flesh guard' or whatever the maker calls it. The holster will be cut to protect you from any part of the gun digging into you.
