Hello all,
Anyone who knows me, knows that sloppiness is a pet peeve and really ticks me off. I especially find sloppy weapon grips abhorring when they cost so much and then it looks like a kindergardner cut the grip panels for it. I was shocked when I picked up my new DW CBOB at the terrible fit and look of the grips that came with it. Just check out the pics below:

The HUGE exposed flat areas of the frame that just jump out at you, and the ever present (on bobtails) "chop" to achieve the angle required at the back. Also, upon handling it, I noticed that the point produced by chopping the angle was bothersome and I imagined quite problematic when shooting any amount of ammo with the weapon. Terrible stuff!
My first stop was out to my wood shop to make a new template for bobtail grips that actually fit, and compliment the weapon, not make it look like a dime store novelty.
Here is my first attempt in Thuya Burl:

Note how close to the frame they fit. I actually had them right on the frame lines, but decided that the thin stainless line all around and evenly shown looked better, so I adapted the template accordingly. See the rounded "fit to the frame lines" cut and finish at the bobtail.
As for the nasty point formed by the brutal chop that is normally accepted (although intolerable in my mind), it's gone and has been replaced by a rounded and smooth transition that feels wonderful in the hand and won't bother anyone who shoots more than 20 rounds at a time.

Gone are the days of having to take what's available because no one bothers to do it right. Bobtail owners can now have grips that do their weapons proud and feel and look great to boot! I'm sorry if this all sounds a little "stuck up" of me, but I'm excited about these and the vast improvement they represent from what's out there right now.
I'll shut up now.

I won't clutter up the board as I live in Kansas, not Texas (don't hold it against me :cheers2: ), but I wanted to stop in and thank Longtooth for his kind words and for posting it here at all. Secondly, I wanted to say that the bobtail grips are up on the site now and will constantly be changing as new grips are made and the posted ones are sold, so stop by and take a look. If you have any questions or want to make a custom order, you can contact me at elitewood@hotmail.com or through the website.
Again, thank you Longtooth for the post and kind words, I truly appreciate it!

Great looking grips! Excellent job.

And.... you don't have to live in Texas to post here. ;-)

I lived in Kansas for 6 years myself (Independence)...and they let me hang out around here.

I didn't notice how poor the the original grips looked until I saw the pictures of the new ones. Much better, especially curved instead of chopped. Nice work.

I had the same reaction. I took my DW CBOB out and took a look at it myself and was surprised to see the poor fit of the default factory grips. Now I'm disappointed in my grips, and I'm carefully eyeing your beautiful walnut grips!

That is incredible work! I don't even own a 1911 yet, but I'm still thinking about buying a set - just in case!! :) Man, I'd love to know how me makes those. I'm a wood-worker (hobbyist) myself.

Wow! Thanks for the kind words all! I'm pleased that you like them. Actually the poor fit of the grips on my Kimber are what got me into making grips in the first place. Moving into bobtails gave me a legitimate excuse to buy a CBOB. :thumbs2: I've been into making custom wood furniture and boxes etc on a hobby level for years, but didn't make the transition to grips until about 5 months ago. I'm thoroughly addicted now. They are a lot of fun, and very rewarding to build. Let's face it, the wood is beautiful on it's own, I just have to shape, sand and finish it to let it all show through. I'm trying to make my way through the hundreds of exotic woods that are out there.
Thanks again!
