Reminds me why I don't watch much TV

I got home from work yesterday and had about 45 min of downtime to kind of chill out and I ended up watching part of a rerun of Law and Order on TNT...
In this episode, it appears that two NY undercover cops were killed while working a case with illegal weapons. Of course NY having harsh gun control laws, invites illegal guns trade on a larger scale than other states or cities (like Texas). Anyway the crux of the plot on the show was kind of like this.
1. some college student going to school in Georgia and his buddy bought 20 ".380s" (these looked like Bersas to me) for $100/ea in GA, to bring home to NY for Christmas vacation and sell for $1000 each "on the street"
2. one of the kid's has a step-father who is a lawyer.
3. cops had set up a sting operation to catch street gun dealers and caught this pair of kids trying to sell the .380s, and one of the kids went to draw his gun during the arrest and got shot and killed by one of the undercover cops. This is the kid whose stepdad is a lawyer
4. stepdad lawyer sets up a web site posting photos of undercover cops, then promises two other street gun dealers that he'll give them 6 of these 20 .380s (which he now has) if they "take care of" the two cops who were involved in the shooting of his stepson
5. much drama ensues etc.
There was one line on the show where one of the assistant DAs said "you can buy these guns cheap in the south where the gun laws leave much to be desired. Did you know that in Georgia, you can buy as many guns as you want in one day?" with incredulity.
The setup that somehow being free to buy guns in "the south" is equal to "more illegal guns in the street" in NY was ridiculous.
I stopped watching this show over 15 years ago when they started the "ripped from the headlines!" tag and got much more political in the plot...
JUNK!! Do people actually watch this? Is this really mainstream ideals on display?
