GRETNA, La. — A 23-year-old man's attempt to show his girlfriend a pistol ended in tragedy when the gun discharged, killing her, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies said 23-year-old Averyell Davis was shot in the abdomen Monday night.

Sheriff's spokesman Col. John Fortunato said Curtis C. Murray has been arrested and booked with one count of negligent homicide.

The couple was in the living room of their home in Gretna when the gun discharged, Fortunato said.

He says Davis told first responders that her boyfriend accidentally shot her, Fortunato said.

Davis died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

Teach your children well so that they may reproduce...I never thought I'd have to say such a thing. Your firearm is not a hammer, your firearm is not a spectacle, and your firearm is not a toy...toys should not be firearms (no matter how cool they are), your firearm is not for show and tell..................
I feel for this woman’s inability to make an impact in this world due to her sudden cease of existence and her family’s loss...I do not feel for her boyfriend.

Terrible tragedy, and totally needless. In a single moment lives are destroyed. When will people learn that there's no such thing as an unloaded gun.

Why is it that when I hear of things like this, my first thought is, "There's more to this"

:grumble Nothing bothers me more than hearing a story like this followed by the words "the gun just went off." I've fired over 2Million rounds at this point in my life and I can count on one hand the number of guns I've seen discharge without someone's booger hook interfacing with the bang switch. Guns don't just go off!

Wow....talk about getting off to bad start for a Friday. That is depressing. 23, killed the woman (I assume) he loved, and now he has to rot in prison for a long period of time destroying 2 whole families. Thats about as tragic as it gets
