John Culberson for Reelection to Congress - 7th District

John Culberson is running for reelection to the U.S. Congress from the 7th District of Texas. I have known John for over 20 years and I am proud to support his reelection. I first met John as an attorney on a case. Each of us represented co-defendants in a civil case and I had the opportunity to work with him several times over the years.
He was a Member of the Texas House of Representatives and was a strong supporter of our efforts to pass the Texas concealed handgun statute. In the U.S. Congress, he continued his support for the Second Amendment and gun owners by supporting the Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. He was also a voice in Washington strongly urging members of Congress to allow the Clinton Gun Ban a/k/a assault weapons ban to expire. His support for the Second Amendment includes signing on an
amicus brief filed in support of gun owners and the Second Amendment in
Washington D.C. v. Heller. John is both a personal friend and a proven ally to gun owners.
A campaign event/fundraiser will be held soon at the American Shooting Center. I believe it will be sporting clays event, but I hope to have more information soon. When I do, I'll post it here. Meanwhile, please drop by John's campaign website at

Thanks,
Chas.

I'm in John's District, and am proud to support him again.
He's also the Greater Houston area's only voice on the Appropriations Committee, and he'll no doubt be busy the next week or so as reparations in Ike's aftermath are understood.

Here is the information on the American Shooting Center fundraiser for Rep. Culberson. Please try to make it if you can. How many candidates do you see having fundraisers at shooting ranges!? This guy is truly on our team.
Chas.
On Friday, October 3rd, at American Shooting Center, Congressman John Culberson will be honored with a fundraising sporting clays shoot. The event will begin with registration at 9:45. Shooting will start at 10:30 and there will be a barbecue lunch.

Here is the "official" invitation to the sporting clays event at ASC next week. Let's have a good turnout by TexasCHLforum members in this area!

Congressman John Culberson press release wrote:Congressman John Culberson announces his strong opposition to $700 billion Wall Street bailout package.
Congressman John Culberson released the following statement today voicing his strong opposition to the Paulson-Pelosi $700 billion Wall Street bailout.
"The $700 billion Paulson-Pelosi bailout forces Americans to choose between bankrupting our children or big Wall Street banks. The revised plan was just released a few hours ago, and while it contains some oversight, eliminates golden parachutes for bad actors, and creates an investment banking insurance program for the future, the bottom line requires me to oppose it.
"This bailout will saddle our children and grandchildren with at least $700 billion in new debt on top of the existing $9.8 trillion national debt. It will double the budget deficit overnight, and it will lead to additional bailouts as the multi-trillion dollar credit default pyramid scheme collapses.
"I fought to help Congressman Richard Baker enact essential reforms of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which would have prevented this crisis today. I was one of only seven congressmen to vote against loosening FHA loan requirements and I have opposed efforts from liberals like Congressman Barney Frank to push Fannie and Freddie to encourage banks to make loans for politically correct reasons rather than sound financial reasons.
"I will not vote to bankrupt future generations to protect Wall Street investment banks from their own mistakes. The best solution to this crisis is to suspend mark-to-market accounting rules, establish a mandatory insurance/guarantee program to cover the banks' losses at no expense to taxpayers, cut the capital gains rate to zero, cut taxes for offshore dollars repatriated back into the U. S., and cut corporate tax rates dramatically to encourage investment and lending. Changing the mark to market accounting rule alone will allow banks to keep non-performing assets on their books until they recover their value, and solve a huge part of the problem.
"My principal, long term goal in Congress is to balance the budget and protect the treasury from bankruptcy - which is why I have opposed so many spending requests as a member of the Appropriations Committee and voted 'no' so often against big spending programs like the Farm Bills, the Medicare Prescription Drug Program, fighting AIDS in Africa, and so many others pushed by this Administration."

I sent him an email yesterday thanking him for voting "NO" on the bailout. He's a good 2A guy and he was very vocal against the rail on Richmond avenue (which I also opposed).

I know that in one article, Culberson said that Ron Paul was the only person who voted "no" more than he did.

Ron Paul endorses Culberson, calls him fiscally conservative
By Jason Thurlkill, PolitickerTX.com Reporter
U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Lake Jackson) may not be backing his party's presidential nominee, but he is throwing his support behind a fellow Texan, U.S. Rep. John Culberson (R-Houston).
In a letter posted on Culberson's campaign website, the former Republican presidential candidate called Culberson a "friend" who has been a "dedicated and reliable voice...for our shared principles of limited government and fiscal conservatism."
Culberson often refers to himself as a 10th Amendment, "Jeffersonian Republican."
Paul vouched for his colleagues' commitment to constitutional principals.
"Like me, John has strong respect for the vision that our Founding Fathers laid out in the Constitution," Paul wrote.
He went on to warn that Culberson's opponent, Democrat Michael Skelly, would spend his "vast personal fortune" in order to defeat him. Skelly is a wealthy wind executive who built one of the nation's largest wind energy companies.
Culberson and Skelly are involved in an increasingly bitter air war over economic issues. It's not surprising that Paul's endorsement emphasized that Culberson "approaches every vote" with regard to how the vote might impact the national debt. That is "why, also like me, John votes ‘no' so often," Paul wrote.

For what it's worth...
I was curious about Michael Skelly's stance on a few issues, including the 2nd Amendment. I was reading "America's 1st Freedom", and there was a question mark listed in the column for his NRA rating. So, I went to Skelly's website and was not able to find information regarding his stance. As such, I emailed his campaign and received the following response.

Hello,
What is Michael Skelly's position on the 2nd Amendment, Roe v Wade and gay marriage? I did not find these issues addressed on his website.

Byron,
I actually don't know the answer to your first question. I have attached a press release below that we sent out earlier this summer about the Supreme Court's decision on the DC weapons case where Michael came out in support of second amendments rights.
On Roe v. Wade, Skelly is pro-choice and believes that comprehensive scientific based sex education can reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.
Michael does not support gay marriage, but does support civil unions. He is in favor of equal benefits for domestic partnerships.
I hope this answers your questions,

Skelly Issues Statement Praising Supreme Court Gun Decision
Michael Skelly, successful wind energy businessman and candidate for Congress
(TX-07), responded to the Supreme Court's ruling on gun rights:
"The Second Amendment guarantees our right to bear arms and today, in a decision that
was crucially important to Texans and all Americans, the Supreme Court affirmed that
right. As a member of Congress, I will work to ensure that the rights of Texas gun
owners are never abridged."
