The budget should be balanced, the treasury refilled, public debt reduced, the arrogance of officialdom tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands curtailed, lest Rome become bankrupt.

This problem has been growing for the last 5 decades!
We the American people have grown lackadaisical and allowed our elected politicians the run of the mill and all but squander the gift that our forefathers sacrificed to give us.
The blame lies solely at the feet of the people!

Sadly, lately you would be correct. The Republican party has changed a lot, and not really for the better.
