1787 - Federalist No. 1 was published in a New York newspaper.
Published under the pseudonym Publius, the Federalist was written by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, with five written by John Jay. A total of 85 essays were published in ten months
Publius was an allusion to Publius Valerius Publicola, a founder of the Roman Republic, and a name that educated people of the period would recognize.
The new Constitution had been written in secrecy and haste and contained compromises that no one was pleased with. It had many prominent, vocal opponents; and its ratification was by no means assured.
The Federalist explained and defended the Constitution, and remains an essential tool to understanding it.
In my opinion, if not for the efforts of these men, the Constitution would not have been ratified, and the United States as we know it would not exist. It might be a small country on the East Coast with New France as a neighbor.
Many versions of the Federalist (more commonly called the Federalist Papers today) are available online, and it is also available in paperback.
