Proud to have served!

My most sincere thanks to all of those that have served our country in the military.

A big Salute, and my heartfelt Thanks to all those who proudly served!

I've always felt odd on Veteran's Day. Technically, I'm a veteran, but I only served a single term during peace time.

I consider the real veterans to be the ones who actually served during war time and made careers in the military.

My thanks to them to taking that bullet for me.

Serving is serving, IMHO. Even though it was during peace time, the potential that it could have turned into war is always present. I thank you and everyone else who served to protect our liberties.

I almost had to argue with a guy, yesterday, to give him Home Depot's Veteran's discount. When I asked if he was a veteran, he told me that he was not, he had only been in the reserves in peacetime. I pointed out that he had still been on the pointy end of the stick even if the stick was just waiting to be used, and gave him his 10% off anyway.

As a side note, Home Depot is offering a 10% discount on purchases up to $2000.00 through Wednesday, for veterans. When this was first announced it said "Active Duty and Retired" after the sentence about "honoring our veterans" and I went a little over the top, objecting to the discrimination against all the other veterans. I don't know how many objected, but the policy was almost immediately changed to ALL veterans, and active duty military, and then I saw the identification requirements, so I did it again, and the result is, at least in my store, you don't have to be carrying your DD-214 around with you, if you claim to be a veteran, you'll get the discount. Yes, there is potential for abuse, but in my experience over the last few days, even after being informed of the possible 10% savings, the potential is slim.

I realize it is supposed to rain today here in Houston, but Bubbles Car Wash is giving free washes to Veterans today. I asked what you needed to verify your service and the cashier responded, "We take your word for it".

Happy Veterans day to all my fellow Veterans. We should all remember those who never came home and those who didn't come home whole.

As for feeling odd I understand what you mean pedalman. I spent 8 1/2 years active duty and almost 10 years total and it still bothers me.

I didn't have bullets flying at me either (heck, our planes did their business from 60,000 feet up sometimes, and were launched far from enemy territory), so it makes me feel guilty in a way. What you have to remember is that you volunteered like so many others to do whatever it was that Uncle Sam asked of you. Ands that sir is something to be proud of, no matter what the circumstances.


I was on a tour bus visitng Pearl Harbor a few years back and it happened to be on Veterans Day. The tour guide was doing his presentation and wanted any veterans present to raise their hands. I couldn't do it, especially not there.

After much thought and over-analyzation I came to the determination that I would be doing others who served a dishonor by hiding my own service in such situations.

Looking back on my service it was worth every minute.

I didn't have any bullets flying around me either.

I did spend 2.5 years under water punching massive holes in the ocean depths waiting for the president to send the message to send the missiles downrange, but luckily the message never came.

The Mediteranean Sea was a crowded place for submarines. We did nearly rub paint with a soviet submarine once. They were so close I recorded the Soviet skipper to order an emergency surface when we turned into him. Diesel boats on the battery are difficult to hear.

Those were the Cold War days.
